It is a temporary solution as they're doing work on the tram tracks. It's been going on at least a year and (as far as I know) there's been no announcement of when it will finish. At present, the tracks on Via Marmorata are being completely reworked. The upside is that the bus moves quite a bit faster than the tram ever did. And, even if there was an announcement of when the work will be finished, I'd be inclined to disbelieve it anyway as projects tend not to be completed on time in Rome. Too many complications.

It has been going on for a few years now. The tram runs from Porta Maggiore to Thorvaldsen, but from Pta Maggiore to Stazione Trastevere, it's a bus. As urbanicon says, it's faster than the tram, but of course, less charming, if that's the word. Maureen www.maureenbfant.com

The bus rides on the tram tracks. In feb 2006 the section we rode on between the Piramide Metro stop and Viale trastvere was a bus that rode on the tram tracks.
Just one illustration of why public transit in Rome is a horror for anyone in a wheelchair.
