My photos from my recent trip arrived today!

I followed discussions of this place on here, and I did a search and read past message posts.

Do you know where I am? Have you been here?

Hint: it's REALLY good! Smile

Changed title since we know where it is now. - Marta

So have I. It was particularly beautiful in the spring when both the nave and the surrounding area were carpeted in wild flowers.

I also loved the tiny little chapel up on the hill, with frescoes by Ambrogio Lorenzetti and the fascinating sinopia that has been uncovered.

September 2006. It was a damp morning and the field in front was surrounded by an amazing number of beautiful dew-covered spiderwebs.

I'll PM you! I'm having fun with this and we'll end up with a great FAQ file on it, with links to past discussions and pics people who have been there are adding. Smile

No! But I know just where it is and I've always wanted to go! Thanks for the photos and the reminder - have to put it on the "must do" list.

(To be fully honest, that rock always looked a lot like hardened mud to me.)

Here in Italy, but probably in your countries too, children always go on at least one school daytrip every year.

It is generally a one-day trip when you are young and a real longer trip when you are older. Anyway, when I was a young child in the Elementary school, San Galgano was always one of the places chosen by the school board: it was a short drive, there were nice woods for a picnic, there was the river nearby to take a walk in the woods and it was simply magic for children.

At that time, we are talking more than 20 years ago, the sword was not protected like now, and honestly, every child tried to give it a try!!!

And still, there it is! Now it's well protected. So, either children are getting stronger, or the stone is getting weaker!!!

In any way it is still a magic place, for young children and older children like us, and it has some good bars in the area!!! Salendo Wine bar, a small bar on the paved road leading up to the church with the stone, is wonderful. They only have cured meat and cheese and other @cold@ foods which they personally select from producers in the area of Massa Marittima. So it's stuff you won't easily find anywhere else. Plus they reinterpret traditional combinations with great creativity and they recommend food -wine combinations.

I always recommend it to my guests.

OK, officially added to "places to go" next year.

The photo is surprising in how much it looks like those I took at some of the ruined monastaries in England and Scotland (enough so that I was wondering what they were doing on an Italy site).

Nice quiz...certainly prompted my interest.

South of Siena, towards Grosseto, near Monticiano. There are two ways to get there. You can either get on the ss223/E78 towards Grosseto and exit following signs to Monticiano, or you can take the very slow but very beautiful ss73.

Gloria does tell you the name in one of her postings. Then do a ST search. There is a lot of information about it. Smile
