Anyone been to the spa in Saturnia? Would like to go for a day while in Tuscany but everything I can find about it on the web talks about hotel accomodations and rates. Want to find out if you can just go for the day while staying elsewhere.

Yes. You can walk in and rent a towel and stuff for the day. There is also -- if you are satisfied with the actual steamy medicinal waters, seeking no luxuries -- a perfectly free patch of the hot springs on a small country road nearby, where lots of people stop their cars and take a quick dip: bring your own towel and bathing wear, of course. Â Â Â I am still now regretting the timorousness of a travel companion and my own typical timorousness in turn in not rocking the boat: on December 31, 1996 ((see diary entry) I missed a once-in-a-lifetime of bathing in hot springs in the snow...
If you do go to the "free" patch of hot springs near Saturnia during the summer, beware of crowds. I was there in 1999, had read guidebooks that said how if you arrived mid-week you might have the place all to yourselves..... Right! There were absolute hoards of people there, mostly Italians I think. We had to park about 1/4 mile down the road -- of course it was August, but..... We still enjoyed it, but had LOTS of company.
I believe that Pauline and Steve have been to the spa.

Hi there. I returned from Terme di Saturnia less than a month ago. I actually stayed at the wonderful hotel there. Yes, you can visit the hotel's waters for something like $10 a day. The facilities are brand new and you get a chair, etc. There is a nice little place for lunch too. I would recommend seeing the falls as well, but it can get REALLY crowded and I was warned to watch my belongings.
There's an article about Saturnia in my new newsletter. You can get a free copy of it at www.dreamofitaly.com. Kathy McCabe {URL=http://www.dreamofitaly.com] Dream of Italy[/URL]
