Nice little article about Verona in today's (May 4, 2008) Washington Post Travel section....concise and well-written, I think.

I also agree with the article writer's sentiments about horse meat - cannot bring myself to try it but will eat just about any other livestock with hooves. As homogenous as the United States has become with the same chain restaurants, gas stations, and stores wherever one travels, I don't think we'll ever see a "Carni Equine" sign. That was unique in Verona.

I love Verona and have usually spent a minimum of 2 days there during each of the last 4 trips, drinking Quintarelli Valpolicella as often as I can; once was enough for my spouse...but I'm working on him for the next trip.

But wouldn't Bologna be a nice change of pace?

I remember seeing a horse meat shop in Verona. I have also seen one in Catania, a few doors away from the trattoria where it was the featured dish that evening. It was good..better than venison, I thought!

I agree that we are not likely to see too much horsemeat sold here in the US, but it is certainly not limited to Verona or the Veneto. Horsemeat is served in many Italian regions as well as all over Europe.

We were in Verona recently (lovely, lovely place!) and had a wonderful meal at "da Ugo".

My husband had 'stufato di asino" (donkey stew, to put it bluntly) and said it was totally delicious.
I declined to try it - call me chicken if you like but I just couldn't come at it.
