Due to some slight changes to our hire car plans, we are now returning our car to Ciampino. We are travelling from Montalcino and are spending the night in Rome before flying to Stockholm the next morning. I am dreading driving (more likely to be by husband!) anywhere near Rome. Can anyone advise on a reasonably painless way to do it? Is there a ring road to avoid the centre? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Ciampino is outside the ring road, with the airport off Via Appia Nuova. You could return the car at Ciampino as you approach Rome, then take a taxi to your hotel and back to the airport the next day. Besides avoiding inner-city traffic, that may be less expensive than keeping your rental car an extra day and paying for hotel parking overnight.
