We are flying into Milan on a Thursday in May. We plan on taking a train the following day to Venice. Do we need to buy train tickets and make reservations before we get to Milan? Or can we make arrangements in Milan, roughly a day before we take the train? Thanks
You can buy tickets at the last minute, no reason at all to buy advance tickets. When we went from Rome to Florence we bought our ticket the day before. There was a couple of kids that got on the train without a ticket and they were able to purchase it on the train, but remember, if you buy it on the train you pay more and you don't have an assigned seat.

I don't agree o this "last minute" thing, but this does not mean that you have to buy your tickets weeks in advance. Buy them at the airport as you arrive in Milano and make sure you ahve a seat reservation (ask for it), in case you are on an Intercity train, where tickest are usually sold with no reservation, unless requested explicitely. One day in advance should be enough.
While checking the schedules of trains to Florence, a pop up ad told me that the price of tickets for Saturdays starting Sat 21 Feb is reduced 15 euro/30 euro to anywhere in Italy, 2nd/1st class booking included. www.trenitalia.com is the site.
