As you all know, the new Ara Pacis Museum is scheduled to open with a ceremony at 10am on Friday 21 April.

If you're wondering what the Ara Pacis is all about, there's a new slide show at the IDC website that will get you up to speed on the history and imagery of the Ara Pacis.

Enjoy!

I am afraid that I don't know when I will be able to visit Rome again, I would have really like to see Ara Pacis. I have wanted to see it for 30 years after I studied about it in College. When I was in Rome On April 1, I was hoping to get close enough to look in the window but there were barricades everywhere.
Maybe they can work on the Mausoleum of Augustus next. It is in terrible shape. It made me sad to see the tomb of one of the greatest leaders Rome ever produced reduced to the condition that it is in.

Thanks for posting this. We've tried to visit several times in the last couple of years and were told at a Tourist Info office in Rome that they didn't know when it would be open.

I am wondering if the Ara Pacis actually opened on April 21st and if anyone has had a chance to see it yet.

Do you think we need reservations? Going to be in Rome in 10 days.

The Ara Pacis museum IS now open (though not completely finished), and you can see the monument. No reservations were necessary. Entry fee is EUR 6 per person. It's also on the list of "Roma Pass" sites, so you can get in free if it's one of your first two Roma Pass sites visited, else for a 50% discount with the pass.
