Yvonne, I have to give you credit for the way you handled the situation with your traveling companions. I don't think I would have been brave enough to do that. Can't wait to read about where you headed next!
My husband and I have been tempted to travel with others, but then always realize it would be a mistake -- for them! He likes to sleep late, I'm world's crankiest sightseer (one sight a day, and I'm unbudgably off to the cafe or the hotel chaise lounge) and now that we live in Italy (hey, on one sight-a-day, you have to live there or you'll never see it all), we're extremely picky about the best cups of coffee in town. We've come to learn that some Italian bars actually do serve espressos we find harshly undrinkable -- and we don't drink American coffee any more.
I even have some sympathy for the ordinarily tri-lingual Belgians being surprised at the monolingual Italians (although where I live, many Italians are bi-lingual at least). I wish Americans got a multi-lingual education.
Finally, I did want to see Positano, and did go, but the bus ride made me sick and I couldn't recommend the ride to anybody.
Sounds like your travel companions had the grace to make themselves scarce when they were no longer welcome and contributed at least a few sights you might otherwise have never seen. Hope the rest of your trip works out more to your style!
I'm still friends with my cousin, so that's good! You never know until you try things, do you? I can hardly wait to go back, and hope to spend another long time over there. It's sure been hot, I notice. Cheers. yvonne
