My husband and I are going to be staying in Venice 5 days. I have found this hotel on trip advisery to be good. My questions is about the rooms for anyone who has stayed. They have a room with frontal and side view of the Giudecca canal ( this is already booked for next September.) They do have a frontal view room. They also have an apartment called Rosa available Ruskin house sounds lovely but no view.If anyone has stayed in any of these rooms let me know. I need to put a deposit down by November 3 and not sure which way to go. Also wondering about size of room? Thank you Stacy
We have stayed at the Calcina several times. Most of the time in a corner room that had windows facing the Giudecca and one window on the side. We also have had a room on the front facing the Giudecca. The corner room is preferable but the front room was also fine. The rooms are a comfortable size--large enough to not fall over each other or the pieces of furniture but probably would not fall into the category of "spacious." We haven't stayed in their apartment. The Calcina is a wonderful place to stay and we would go back in a heartbeat except that we have gotten used to renting apartments Go for it!

Wilson, I don't know if this is too late for you, but I stayed at La Calcina last year for a week and absolutely loved it!!! I had two different single rooms which were small but very very well laid out. Both had side views of the Guidecca canal. The first room I had (it was for only one night I tacked on my visit at the last minute) didn't have a very good view; it's one small window was too far from the front of the hotel and the canal to see much.
However, the second room was much better. Two good-sized windows on the side but closer to the front of the hotel so the angle wasn't bad. I felt like it was a very good view.
I'd be very tempted by the room with windows looking to the front AND the side. Then you'd have almost a panoramic view -- it would be lovely at the front but from the side, it is interesting to look down to the left onto a little bridge that crosses a small canal and watch all the passersby. I'm not sure how well you can see that from the front.
I obviously haven't stayed in their apartment, but I'd definitely opt for the room with the views -- I loved being able to look out onto the Guidecca, and the people passing, whenever I liked! And it night, it's beautiful to look across to Redentore church.
We were lucky enough to stay in a corner room for three nights this past September. When we got home, we re-booked for late April 2007 and could only get four of the five nights with a view, and then only frontal. We grabbed it immediately.
If you will spend time in your room and a view is important to you, you can't get much better than this. If more space and kitchen facilities matter, you might want to choose the apartment.
