This is what World Guide to Venice says about winter weather: quote: The weather can prove unpredictable from November to February, although it is generally fairly mild. There can be heavy rain and occasional icy Artic winds, so be sure to bring a warm overcoat, scarf and gloves. If you are planning to visit outdoor locations, water-resistant boots or shoes with a good grip are recommended as the pavements can get very wet after heavy rain, and an umbrella can be a useful item to carry. Venice under snow is not uncommon and quite unforgettable.
Imagine preparing yourself for Melbourne at its windiest and rainiest and Katoomba at its coldest, and you should be adequately covered. Wear your outdoor walking shoes / boots on the plane so they don't have to take up space in your luggage (a bit of a pain in the neck taking off from Australia's summer in heavy shoes or boots, but you've got to do what you've got to do). Carry your coat over your arm onto the plane so that it likewise doesn't take up room in your luggage. If you're someone who can wear black, use it as the basis of your travel wardrobe. Then you can dress your outfits up or down with a few accessories, and everything can mix and match. Pack long underwear. Adjust to changing temperatures by adding or subtracting layers. Have a great trip.
