I habe been looking at the restaurant reviews for ideas for our upcoming trip and while there are many of them, I have noticed that most are 2-3 years old.

I thought I would ask if anyone has a place that they may have been to more recently. I don't need a full review, just some good recommendations. We like casual places after long days of touring, and we're definitely not the dressy type.

We love lo guarracino in Positano - have gone the last two summers, and will be taking clients there this summer once again. The (not difficult) beautiful cliffside walk is such a great intro to the place, and the cheerful owners and marvelous setting, overlooking a cove to the left of Positano as you face it from the water, are super. Super fresh seafood - delicious! Here's a post from our 2006 trip about the place. Can't wait to get back!

My daughter and I ate at this restaurant (Gigino's) repeated in Feb 2007. it is very informal. The Fruitt dei Mare is great.

La Laterana was not open in the Winter of 2007, but we ate there in 2006 and really liked it also

Oh Marcia, looking at these suggestions, photos and restaurant recs, makes me so envious. Positano and Sorrento...such pretty and romantic places. How lucky you are to be there very soon! So lucky! Barb Cabot

Leaving Sunday for a 4 day trip down to the coast.
am going to Sorrento and will write back.
It is a press trip so some of the places are organized by them but will also have time on my own.

I bought Carla Capalbio's new Campagna book for reading up on my trip!

Just returned from Italy with a stop in Positano

Two recommendations

Da Costantino Da Costantino
- which is above Positano in Montepertuso - any way it is a family restaurant with an incredible view - reasonable prices and great food. They will pick you up and drop you off at your hotel gratis

La Cambusa - in Positano near the beach - good food - great location - moderately priced

Best

Cucina Casareccia is our favorite restaurant in Positano. It's quite a hike up the hill, but the views are great. Service was great.

Our best meals in Sorrento were home-cooked at the B&B where we stayed, Villa Oriana. They don't have a restaurant for non-guests.

There are some photos in my blog Southern Italy: Sorrento and Beyond

We ate is five restaurants in Sorrento at the begining of April. The quality was average - plenty of evidence of frozen fish liberally passed off as fresh. A coupel of established hotels apparently serve good food but charge exhorbiatnt prices. Best meal we had was in il leone rosso. Foudn the Rough Guide's recommendations merited serious sceptical appraisal.

Marcia, I know my reviews for Sorrento are old (2005) but I still dream about the simple meal I had on the beach at Trattoroa da Emilia as recounted here. It was a grilled fish dinner that has not yet been matched anywhere since (I keep trying in every costal town-no luck yet)! The orginal recommendation was from Jim Zurer whose advice I am always happy to follow. I second the recommendaion of La Laterna that was also very good.

Thank you all for your recommendations; it does bring the review section more up to date.

colleen, I do have your favorite restaurant marked, I'm hoping it's still wonderful a mere 3 years later.

Off beat and off track, but consider the two restaurants in Nocelle, a small town above Positano. First is an alimentari (grocery store) by day, but the owner has an expansive terrace overlooking the sea and serves wonderful and inexpensive meals. A bit more uptown is the La Tagliata (sp?) that is a tratorria that serves wonderful courses of pasta, fish and meats. No written menus in either locations. And oh, to answer your question on the "freshness" of my reviews, I just returned to the States last week.

We have plans to visit La Tagliata one evening; good reviews here, but in threads, I think. There is some connection, if I recall, between the family at Albergo California and the restaurant.

Again, thank you.
