We will be in Rome for a week in April. Since we've been there many times and have always wanted to visit Orvieto - and will be at Rome Termini to see someone off on Good Friday morning - would this be a good time for a day trip there? Would things be closed on Good Friday? Any just-sees or must-eats there?

Stores will be open. The main thing is that touristic visits to the Duomo and other churches would be discouraged.

Not necessarily. In the Catholic rites Good Friday has no Masses and a single service in the afternoon; the following Saturday no services at all. I would be more afraid that at Easter time Orvieto is a bit crowded and it may be difficult to find a restaurant without reserving.

I think the Signorelli frescoes in the Duomo are a must see.

Don't forget to visit the State museum, just behind the Duomo for the best Etruscan exhibit...
