Sharon - depending on what time your flight is, you're probably best off staying in Milan proper, and taking the Malpensa Express train from the Cadorna station to the airport. If you search the board for "Cadorna" you'll find previous threads discussing this.

If you need to be at the airport by as early as 7:30 or 8 A, I'd recommend staying nearby. It's a long trek from downtown Milan out to MXP. I join Seth in liking www.hotelvillamalpensa.com (mixed reports on the dining there), and for a three-star I like Hotel Cervo, www.hotelcervo.it/english.htm. Both have shuttles.

Best wishes,

If you have a car, you can get to Malpensa from Lake Orta easier than downtown Milan. There's a thread I saw about staying in Sesto Calende, if you want to search for that.

The Trip Planning pages on SlowTrav have a good section Leaving/Arriving via Malpensa. It has links to reviews of hotels.

Another option is First Hotel, which is on airport property. We stayed there last May and it was new, very modern, and comfortable. Not cheap but it was convenient, only 5 minutes from Malpensa which is great if you have a really early flight. Free shuttle to/from Malpensa.

I have reservations at the Hotel Ascot Malpensa this fall. It is close to the airport and had a shuttle van.

Another vote for Hotel Cervo. It ain't pretty, but it's everything you want in an airport hotel: clean, safe and 10 minutes from the terminal. We stayed there in 2005 and were a little taken aback when we drove up to it (it's in a kind of industrial area). But the room was spacious, the breakfast was good, and the shuttle got us to our terminal in plenty of time for our 7:00 a.m. flight.

We stayed at the First Hotel last September.
Not cheap but comfortable, clean and their shuttle service was good. Besides taking us to our early morning flight, we went into Milan for the afternoon... they took us to the airport to catch the Malpensa Express and gave them a call when we got back and they picked us up.
