I saw a brand new gleaming stainless steel version in an upscale cafe in Paris once. And I travelled around Morocco with a girl a few years ago who didn't use a toilet for a week...

My wife and I were in Turkey in March and didn't encounter any "Turkish" toilets. Admittedly we were only there for three days and didn't get out of Istanbul, but this makes me wonder as to the origin of the name. Years ago, in another life, I did encounter any number of similar facilities in northern and eastern Africa, from Egypt down to Tanzania. In our more in-depth travels around the Sabina area of Lazio and around Rieti and Viterbo provinces we have not run into many instances of these "Turkish" phenoms either.
