Can anyone advise on the best means of public transportation to Volterra - train? bus? where to connect to bus/train? Grazie.

Bus only: http://www.cpt.pisa.it/orari/extra.htm for the province of Pisa lists some bus lines, including to Saline where there's a spur train line, and Cecina on the coastal line to Rome. The bus to Colle Val d'Elsa lets you connect to other buses to Florence and Siena.
