We are off to Italy in April- hurray!!! I haven't been "home" since last October and it has been the longest I have ever been without seeing my family. I can't wait!
Anyway, I started to write this post because my husband is a keen golfer and even if we have been going to Italy for almost 15 years he has played only in Arenzano with a friend a couple of years ago.
If he had to choose a golf course for a round of golf in Piedmont in April, what would you suggest?
We can find a lot of descriptions etc on various golfing websites, but here I am after the personal opinion of the "real" golfers if possible :-)
Claudia, unfortunately I cannot recommend the club I know to be the best from many of our guests here, since I myself have never played on it, and therefore it would break the rules to suggest looking at it. I will have to send you a PM.
In the interest of fairness and trying to get this policy right, I want to post that Shannon sent me a PM this morning my time and told me that it is ok for me to post the name of this golf course (assuming that I am not plugging a friend). Golf Club Villa Carolina, which is in Capriata d'Orba near Novi Ligura is considered by my golfing guests to be the best in the area. There are two 18 hole courses, an advantage for times when there are weekend tournaments on one of the courses. They are very well groomed courses, there is a beautiful old villa with restaurant and facilities.
Thanks for your PM and the message here. I thought that Villa Carolina was a good choice from their website, course plan etc.
Doesn anybody know if there is anywhere to take kids for a walk? I mean if my husband goes and plays with a friend, can I go with the kids and have a walk around the grounds (not along the golf course off course!) or is it just a golf course?
It looks beautiful and I wouldn't mind go there too - but I don't play golf :-(
Claudia, when you drive in, there is a beautiful long tree-line alleyway which leads you to the main entrance. There is a pool as well, if you call over there you can maybe see if it is heated/will be open in April at least for sitting around.... I think there is really ample room for a nice shaded walk.
Let me correct something -- I think the second course is 9 holes. My guests play it twice if the 18 hole course is booked with a tournament.
...and of course you can always head over to Serravalle Scrivia to the outlet mall for a couple of hours, it's maybe 20 minutes away by car.
if I can add to this thread: We have had serious Golfers stay with us for a week and they tried a different course each day and gave us their feedback. They thought that the 2 course complex at Carmagnola I Girasoliand "La Margherita" were the best courses from a golfers perspective, although in fairness they did not get to Villa Carolina. However they also thought that the Margara at Fubine was very good, and I would think that this would be very convenient if you are staying at Treville. There are also several courses around Lake Maggiore which I don't know about but would be quite scenic I should imagine.
Thanks Tim. I'll let you know where we will end up going. Our Italian friend who plays golf lives in Arenzano so may be Novi Ligure would be better, but if they are coming to Treville too, then the golf courses that you have suggested may also be a good option.
I also know that there is a practice course near the river Po called "Il Golfino". I have emailed them to ask for info (in Italian!), but I just got a read receipt back and nothing else.
If anybody has any comment on this practice golf club, pelease let me know.
The Acqui Terme Golf course is kind of like a glorified driving range. If you hit the ball too hard, you'll knock a window out at the hospital. Having said that, some of our guests go down there to kill a couple of hours sometimes. I think it's about 10 holes. Having said all that, they also say it can be a bit tricky as a course, and that the restaurant is good.
