As one who cherishes charming, small villages for puttering, interacting and taking photos, I thought I'd poll you all for the hidden, unsung gems you've stumbled upon which most moved your joy-in-beauty button in these areas of my upcoming trip:
Lakes region (esp off Garda's beaten path!) Piemonte - Langhe Veneto Near Florence Tuscany - within about 50 miles of Poggibonsi Riviera (Lerici) to Langhe
I thought this might also be a nice reference for others: Is there a better thread title for future searching? (My effort with 'charming villages' didn't turn up too much!)
montefioralle (south of florence) - the epitome of a medieval tuscan village. a perfect little walled village on a hilltop, formed in a circle - beautiful views.
monteriggioni (north of siena) - population: 65. dante called it "giants" his book, "the inferno". the village sits high up on a hill with walls that are 600m in circumference with 14 towers, which were built from 1213 to 1219, and they were much higher then.
in both of these places, you can pretend you're back in the renaissance. they are both awe-inspiring.
