As one who cherishes charming, small villages for puttering, interacting and taking photos, I thought I'd poll you all for the hidden, unsung gems you've stumbled upon which most moved your joy-in-beauty button in these areas of my upcoming trip:

Lakes region (esp off Garda's beaten path!)
Piemonte - Langhe
Veneto
Near Florence
Tuscany - within about 50 miles of Poggibonsi
Riviera (Lerici) to Langhe

I thought this might also be a nice reference for others: Is there a better thread title for future searching? (My effort with 'charming villages' didn't turn up too much!)

Curiously, there are 2 Montagnana's: one a bit southwest of Firenze, the other a bit southwest of Padova. I'm sure you mean the latter, Rar.

Thanks for the Pari photos, Gloria. What a treat to have a rainbow over the village!

montefioralle (south of florence) - the epitome of a medieval tuscan village. a perfect little walled village on a hilltop, formed in a circle - beautiful views.

monteriggioni (north of siena) - population: 65.
dante called it "giants" his book, "the inferno". the village sits high up on a hill with walls that are 600m in circumference with 14 towers, which were built from 1213 to 1219, and they were much higher then.

in both of these places, you can pretend you're back in the renaissance. they are both awe-inspiring.

To add to the list my favourite unspoilt hill top towns in Piedmont:

Cocconato - on the monferrato riveira

Moncalvo - an artists town

San Damiano - hang out with the old guys playing bocce in the streets of this old town

Calosso - incredible cantina's carved into the limestone all with a "crotin" cellar within a cellar

My favourite Ligurian town

Noli - an ancient republic

My favourite bigger towns:

Asti - historic and bustling
Acqui Terme - charming and lots to do.

In Piedmont go to Treville, Cella Monte and Moleto.

Treville, on top of a hill: beautiful village of the Monferrato region!

Tim, I could not find Calosso in my Michelin Italy map book. What other towns are close by? Confused
