I'm very excited to be planning our honeymoon trip to Italy in September. We are planning on flying into Florence, arriving the afternoon of 9/7/05 and we are flying out of Rome early in the morning on 9/22/05. We'd like to also spend a few days around the Amalfi Coast....so...any suggestions for itineraries that would work for 15 days in Italy?
TIA for your help!!

If everything is equally appealing to you, four full days in each location works as well. Day one arrival, 2-5 Florence, day 6 travel to AC coast, 7-10 AC, day 11 travel to Rome, 12-15 Rome, day 16 departure.
For less city time, expand the middle part.
You didn't say how you plan to travel in country - trains and bus or rental car?

I also think three (or four) nights on the Amalfi coast would be fine, depending on your interests, and I'd split evenly the rest of the time between Florence and Rome.
You can take the train from Florence to Sorrento, and Sorrento back to Rome, by tranferring at Naples. For round trip between Naples and Sorrento, take the local Circumvesuviana (which also stops at Pompeii). (Make sure your connections in Naples are at the central station which links with the Circumvesuviana, and not at the other Naples stations.)
From Sorrento, you can take a hydrofoil to Capri. (Sorrento is probably the best place for the Amalfi coast if you don't have a car.)
If this is your first trip, there are many good tours in Florence and Rome. For example, www.artviva.com and www.contextrome.com , among others. From Florence, a tour by bus to San Gimignano and Siena is a great way to see two interesting towns and a bit of the Tuscan countryside.

The places you are visiting are better served without a car (except maybe for AC, but I haven't been there). A car will just be a hassle in Rome and Florence.
Driving vs. train is a matter of personal preference. You don't need a car at all for your itinerary. In fact, the only part of your trip a car would be at all useful for is the time on the AC. Personally, I think it would be more of a hassle than it's worth (and quite expensive).
Direct trains from Florence to Naples take about three and a half hours. For Sorrento, at Naples Centrale you'd switch to the Circumvesviana train for the rest of the ride (about 45 minutes or so I think).

As Ellen said, it is a matter of personal preferences. I personally like to drive in the area close to Naples, and driving in Rome and Florence doesn't bother me. It is like driving in LA, or NY...THAT WAS SOMETHING. I prefere travelling by cars because it is easier to go for daytrip that way, without being tied to hours and timetables... One thing. It is your honeymoon...I would lock myself (and my love) in a POSITANO hotel for the first 5 days.
I vote too that you save your time and avoid hiring a car to drive to Amalfi. Train there from Florence and train to Rome.
YOu could while in Amalfi hire a car with a driver for the day and get a taste of the most beautiful places without worrying about getting lost. Just enjoy the ride.
