I have rented an apartment in Barberino Val d'Elsa for two weeks and plan to cycle through the region. I bike quite a bit and am not too worried but would at leaqst like to know a bit about the hills around San Gimiagnano, Radda, Greve, and Certaldo. Also are there any special little gems of sights or restaurants the I should check out while I am in this area?

Tim-- Barbarino is a lovely little town, and a great location for biking. Have you checked out the restaurant listings on the main SlowTrav site? Also look at http://www.divinacucina.com/code/tuscany.html for restaurants in the area. As for biking, there have been a few threads here-- use the "find" function above. And here are a few sites that may help-

Have you ridden before in Chianti?
There are some great hills.. no bike lanes... and lots of traffic. I don't ride, but see riders all the time.
Will you be riding alone or with friends.
Most of the Italians ride on Sunday Mornings... in packs!

I live in Certaldo and there is a windy back road that connects to Barbarino, Sciano and some other tiny villages.
The Isola e Olena is one of my favorite wineries out here.

The back road to San Gimmy is fabulous too,.
I will see if there are any biking maps available here that may help.

Thanks for the info Diva. I will be cycling alone. I will be there for the first two weeks of March so I am hoping the traffic might be a little lighter and I definitely plan on taking the back roads. I look forward to trying some of ypour recommended restaurants in Certaldo.

Traffic will be much lighter but you could easily also find snow so come prepared clothing wise for that.
