Hi all, Any hints on good places to buy paper products (such as a beautiful journal). I know different places are known for different things such as glass, leather etc. Any help is appreciated! Cheers Robyn.

I assume you mean in Italy? My favorite in Venice is called Il Papiro, not far from San Marco. (Il Papiro, Calle del Piovan, San Marco ). They have great stuff - journals, papers, pens and cards. I bought a series of 6 note cards there that have obviously Italian windows looking out onto the skyline of different cities. We had them framed together and it's one of my favorite things from Italy now. Hard to explain but you'll know what I'm talking about when you see them.

There are Papiro's all over Italy too, lovely things they are a chain store and also have shops in some of the bigger cities of the world.
Each city will also have artisan bookbinders and papermakers. you can find marblized paper, stamped or leather books all really special. Perhaps if you let us know what cities you will be visiting we can suggest our favorites!
I think Robin is going to Venice... lots of great paper shops there (like Il Papiro).
My favorite is Il Pavone, near the Guggenheim - it is on the same calle as the Guggenheim store, and you can't miss it. They have the most beautiful stationary on soft paper that curls, stamped with the Lion of St. Mark. Their prices are good too.
Exactly what I meant! My aunt that lived in Venice for 35 years first took me to Pavone, I was hooked! In Florence I can't tell you how many paper making shops as well as bookbinding shops we have! overwhelming!
Robyn, if it is Venice you are asking about, don't forget to check Colleen's notes on shopping in Venice on Slow Traveler site. Besides Il Pavone, she also suggests Legatoria Piazzesinear the church of Santa Maria del Giglio. The list is great. It includes stores which sell some very unique items to Venice.

words of wisdom to live by from Stephen Sondheim's The Frogs {The chorus is singing a prayer to Dionysus...} Dionysius "A hymm to me, the god of wine..." Xanthius (His slave) "I thought you were the god of drama?" Dionysius "I am the god of wine and the god of drama. A little wine will get you thru a lot of drama"

Thanks everyone. I was looking for past postings but was getting so much other stuff in my search! We arrive in Venice first and I thought it would be nice to write in an Italian journal rather than one bought at home. We also visit Florence and Sienna and Lucca. I love beautiful stationary and I think my husband is quaking at the thought of letting me loose in Italy! Also while I've got you here, any recommendations on purchasing masks in Venice? I'm sure there are the very expensive/ not very nice ones for the tourists, but I'm prepared to delve a little deeper. Thanks Robyn.

Here are a few updates for my Venice shopping notes:
UPDATE: *Il Pavone: also has hand stamped fabric items such as tote bags and small hair accessories
San Polo Il Pavone shop is located in Campiello Meloni
ADDS: Under "Tassels and tapestries" *Colorcasa - Showroom in San Polo with beautiful tapestry and velvet products, including a fabulous Lion of St. Mark wall hanging. Located on Ruga Rialto between Rialto and Campo San Polo. http://www.colorcasavenezia.it
Under "Hand made glass bead jewelry ..." *Dona Maria Luisa has a shop with a wonderful variety of lovely jewelry at 2738 Calle dei Saoneri in San Polo, near Campo San Polo, telephone: 5222884. She also carries Murano glass items and other miscellaneous Venetian souvenirs. Maria Luisa is very friendly and helpful - you'll be happy you shopped with her!
New category: "Leather purses" Patrizia has a small corner shop in San Polo at Campiello Meloni. Her prices are very reasonable, and she has a wonderful selection of leather purses, briefcases, purse-backpacks and small leather items.
re: Masks - Shannon and/or Ruth can give you exact directions to Rita and Massimo's mask shop in San Polo. They have a wonderful selection of high quality and unique hand made masks. Rita also paints lovely watercolors of Venetian scenes and sells the prints at an excellent price. (Massimo and his brother Sergio have another mask shop in Rialto ...)
If you love fine paper and are venturing into central Italy, you should try and make a stop in Fabriano. It is an ancient paper manufacturing town and home to one of my personal favorite water-color papers….. Fabriano, cold pressed and neutral p h (acid free) as well as home to the largest paper museum in Italy Museo della Carta. If you see paper as an art form, this is the place to go.
