Mary Jane Cryan introduced me to the Italian Notebook site during il GTG degli osti e delle ostesse in January. You sign up and it sends a short daily email blurb about some aspect of life in Italy.

I agree. It's probably one of the few newsletters that I've signed up for over the past few years that I actually enjoy opening up everyday! Mostly because I know that it will be well produced and worthwhile.

I also just signed up and find it quite nice to read a brief piece whith photos about an interesting tidbit. And since we have been to Rome before, this is a good way to find sights that don't have a 2-hour waiting line or a 2-months advance reservation.
Nicely done!

I am quite interested in seeing the Room of Livia at Palazzo Massimo alla Terme, but I can't see any reference to it on the web pages I turn up, and don't know if I have to pre-purchase tickets to the Palazzo or not. Can anyone enlighten me about this? Thanks.

No reservations are needed for the Palazzo Massimo. We went to see the frescoes from the Naples Museum on display last month as were delighted to find Livia's Room on display as well.
So glad that everyone is happy with their daily dose of life in Italy...those of us who live here and write the "Italian Notebook" enjoy sharing. Some feedback as to your favorite "type" of post would be helpful to those of us who do the "reporting". Let us know which ones you enjoy most, inspire you to visit, etc. You can read them all on the Archives section.
Most of the info comes from GB who lives in Trastevere and never goes out without his digital camera. Thus the mostly Roman slant, it depends where your writers are living.
This was my second installment -- and what a hoot it was! My first installment came into my bulk mail and didn't have any pictures. I put the address in my address book and today's came in with pictures. I'm glad. I wouldn't have wanted to have missed the pic of the cop car!
This was only my second day also. I have enjoyed each one so far. I also did not have photos at first but then found a link I could click on to have the photos shown in the email. Today's notebook page opened up with the photos showing. Thanks again Chris and Mary Jane!
I found this thread a few weeks ago and have been enjoying my daily installment tremendously! GB's reports from Roma always bring a smile and today's was hysterical Mary Jane, can't we recruit some of our Italian slowtalkers to report from their towns? Any volunteers out there? The Notebook has become my daily Italy fix until I can return next year (I hope!).

Hi all, I had a lousy day at work (don't ask - it is complex and frustrating) and I was not very nice to a couple of really wonderful people as I was so upset.
I then saw my note for today (15 april) and it made me feel better. I sent it along to the lovely people I was not so nice to with this offer: the "Notebook" entry, or some flowers, or some chocolate for my apology.
They all wanted the Notebook entry. (And forgave me my pouting.)
As you see from the police & prosciutto story, real life here is often more weird than a Fellini filmscript. GB is looking for contributors since some of us go away on holiday in May & June. I'd encourage some of you to contact him with suggestions.
