Wondering if anyone can tell me what to expect for weather in Italy in late May? We will be spending a few days in Rome, as well as a week in Positano on the Amalfi Coast. Will the sea be swimmable?
We were in Italy the last two weeks of May last year. (05)
We went to the Amalfi Coast first - I think it was 5 nights. It was warm - almost very warm some days. Our inn didn't have the air turned on yet, but we slept with the balcony doors wide open and were comfortable.
People were taking the boats out to swim. There is a man that is recommended on here that is very good and does tours from Positano (Capri is one possibility) and stops twice for the people to swim. That would have been possible with the very warm weather at the beach.
Then in Rome we had an a/c apartment and the first thing we did when we arrived was to turn it on! We had spent the day at Hadrian's Castle and Tivoli and we were hot and tired.
So unless there is a rainy spell, you should find the weather very pleasant. I hope this helps!

Just wanted to add our experience. We have been to the Amalfi Coast last year end of June begginning of July. Even if it was hot, the water wasn't too warm. And some days it was cold I would say. And we expected that as we travel every year to the mediteranean sea. I know that some people from Canada are disapointed every year that the water is pretty cold. The fact is that they are used to Carrebean islands or other islands where it is hot all the time (never under 20C), then the water is really warm. They usually assume that everywhere a bit to the South the weather is hot. I just remind them that not all the other countries are having a tropical climate, so the water can be cold in spring and fall, not to talk about winter.
Chances are it will be warm and sunny. I have been there the past 2 Mays in a row and both were fabulous. Always bring a sweater in the evening, just in case!
