This
CIRS page shows a map (also attached below) that shows only outlines of the zones.
Also notice the phrase
"trova la zona dove sta il tuo Comune" This was a hyperlink that allowed you find out which zone a town is in, but the link is either broken or wasn't activated when they redid the website.
With the BIRG,(1day) the BTR (3 day)and the CIRS (7day) regional tickets, the center of Rome, zone A, counts as two zones. On the train and metro map of Rome,(available on the ATAC website umder "Mappe", (look for the
Metro e ferrovie regionali) the station where the second zone starts is marked with red lettering.
The best thing to do would be to buy your CIRS from some place that will be able to tell you how many zones you need to buy.
In the fall of 2005 we stayed at a villa in Ariccia and were able to use a 3 zone BIRG or CIRS for our travel into Rome. The ticket is also good for the buses and metro and even the CoTral blue buses in Lazio.
