Hi everyone,

First question:
I will be with a group of my cousins who are all pretty much 30-ish years old. We're looking forward to dancing the night away a couple of nights while we're in town. Does anyone know or can recommend the current hot spots for nightlife in Rome? What kind of music do they play? How do people dress? What is cover charge typically like?

Second question:
Can someone recommend a quieter hangout (like a pub) where we can share some drinks, chat, and not have to compete over loud music that you would get at a club. We're not looking for dinnner spots but rather, places to hang out after dinner.

Thanks!

Thanks stella.

Have you had any first-hand experience with any of these that you can share?

Oh, Rachella, no. I am sorry. I don't. I only had them bookmarked on the offhand chance I develop social skills later in life.

Wink Grin

Seriously, though, I have walked by some Roman clubs and they look very much like those here in New York...fabulously dressed young and hip Romans abound.

MoscowGirl, in this thread mentioned some clubs, (scroll down) and maybe she has first-hand experience.

I say, just go and give them a try. You can always do some hopping from one to another. Take along the number of a radio taxi company and a cell phone....

Stella that is a great link. Not one I'd stumbled on. We are booked at the Ripa Hotel for a week. I hope it lives up to the hipe. Cool

Yes, I've been to these clubs I listed. And NY, and Paris, and Moscow, and Tokyo, and you name it....

Ok guys. This is totally Tourism-Un-PC. But what do we “girls” want in foreign lands, when we think (being single and all), that we’ll dance the night away…… Italy and many places in Europe (excluding parts of Greece and Ibiz, if we’re 18) is not Puerto Vallarta… No guy will come up to a 30+ year old and profess undying desire to dance with you and “Only You”.

There is no more “La Dolce Vita” left on this earth…… You have to make up you own sweet life. No Gregory Peck will pick you off the street and put you on a Vespa to a Tiber Dance spot.

You come as a tourist group to a “disco”, and you’ll stay a “group”…… Unless you make up your own fantazy! And then you don’t need a disco.

Rent a hotel that has a roof-top. Like hotel Sistina in Rome. Or any other hotel with a roof-top. Believe-you-me…….nobody by you will use it! So get a portable ghetto blaster. Take your own CDs, and buy drinks of course…… And have your self a Roof-top dance party… Nobody will complain….. And you can “dance your night away on a roof-top of XXX city”.

Do you really need “people who’ll never speak with you”? and paying the entrance fee?

There is no better place to “dance the night away” than “having your own space” and “being with friends”. Make your own dancing-queen fantasy…… On a roof top of a 3* hotel.

Good time have passed.... You can no loger take a dip in Trevi Fountain.... There is a blimey police officer that will pull you out and fine you.... And Roman discos are not as "free".... they are "westernized".

Make your own "dancing night"...... you can even do it with a boom-box and few bottles in Villa Borghese parque....

I thought its a proper American term for a portable music "construction". If this is offencive, i did not mean it.

Actually what offends me more is the idea that blasting music from a rooftop bar is acceptable urban behavior and that "no one wil complain . . . "

MoscowGirl,

The term "ghetto blaster" is not offensive. Don't worry. However, it is definitely an older term that we don't hear much nowadays.

Thanks for the private rooftop party idea. You are right, it is possible to just make our own fun. If there's a way, we'll try.

HOwever, we're not looking to get "picked up" at a club/bar by suave Italian men...honestly! We're a mixed group of men and women, mostly young married couples anyways. When I said we wanted to dance the night away, I meant that literally...we just LOVE to dance. So with that mindset, I'm sure we'll have a good time, even if we stick out as a big tourist group at a club.

Thanks for the list of suggestions everyone. I now have a few ideas for clubs.

Does anyone know of any good lounges/pubs we can head to after dinner? Not looking for any pretentious atmosphere here, simply a place to hang out, have drinks, have good conversations in a fun environment.

Everybody can feel free to jump in here if I am wrong. BUT, I don't believe there is as strong of a "bar" culture in Rome as there is in major American cities. For instance, in New York, you can find a bar around every corner; not so in Rome.

I have to admit that I cringe when I hear the word "pub" being used in regards to Italy, but they do exist. Some are English or American-themed, so much so that they make me forget I am in Italy. Which is exactly what I don't want want to do!

You may enjoy going to a wine bar, or enoteca. From that same website, here is a list.

I am not sure where you are staying, but head over to the Campo dei'Fiori area; It is very lively at night, there are a number of bars and wine bars there.

I haven't been to the club in Hotel Ripa (Suite) in quite some time. In fact, I had heard someone say that it is now closed. But I am not positive.

It might not be as strong as most American cities. But nevertheless, there is still a very decent presence of pubs/bars throughout the city of Rome. From places like the very American oriented bars in Campo di Fiore to ones that rarely see foreigners in other parts of the city. Nightlife in Rome is not just about enotecas. The city has venues of all caliber to offer.

When I was in Rome I noticed the level of noise was far more than I was accustomed to, but it was just the noise of people living. People have to live. With that many people together with open windows and thin walls I think one has to become accustomed to noise. So maybe a private party with music wouldn't seem as out of place. I don't think Moscowgirl was implying that one would "blast" the music. Ghetto blaster is just a term for a portable stereo. I thought it sounded like a fun alternative to struggling to fit into a bar scene with folks you don't know. I would have been thrilled if that popped up on the roof of my hotel.

there is a TON of bars/hang-outs lining piazza di campo dei fiori. its very cute in the mornings w/ the market and such, but at night it turns into one giant party.
all the bars have outdoor seating and will give you 'to go' cups for your drink upon request, so you can wander the piazza and meet people.
mostly college-age crowd, a lot of americans and foreign students. much less dressy than the actual clubs and such. some places are rowdier than others. no dancing that i remember, but as MoscowGirl says, ya gotta bring your own party. Joanna's Dancing Man

there was another pub we found called Trinity College (Via del Collegio Romano 6, off Via del Corso) that was a great little hang out. lots of Guiness and good cocktails, indoor and outdoor seating.

as you can tell these are all bars/pubs. may not be the 'lounge' scene your thinking of, but they are fun!

Lately it occurs to me
what a long, strange trip its been

Never mind about Italian, what on earth does it mean in English Confused

When we moved to St. Louis (about 16 years ago), Chris went to happy hour (two drinks for the price of one) at a bar with some people after work. He only ordered a single drink and the bartender asked him if he'd like his second drink in a "go-cup." You see, back then it was NOT illegal to literally, drink and drive, so the bartender was willing to give Chris his "free" drink in a to-go, or go cup, so that he could imbibe on the way home.

Absolutely. There are some great bars and cocktail spots in Rome. I just suggested an enoteca because I generally enjoy them, and they vary greatly in atmosphere and style.

Bar, pub, lounge, enoteca, etc. It's all semantics. I'm not familiar with the names of the various types of establishments, so I just used the term bar/pub (since those are terms I'm familiar with) to mean any place to enjoy a drink with friends. However, if going to an enoteca is Rome's answer to a bar, then we'll definitely visit one.

As they say, "When in Rome..."
