I would not suggest that you simply take a taxi from Fiumicino. There is a very recent thread about problems with taxis at Fiumicino.
If you consider that from Termini you will most likely have to take a taxi to your hotel, then a limousine or shuttle service will probably not cost more than taking the Leonardo Express.
These are some of the limousine and/or shuttle services that I have seen recommended:
The Leonardo Express is 9.5 Euros per person and goes only to Termini
The other train FR-1 (Regional Train-1) from FCO is 5 Euros and goes to Trastevere, Ostiense, Tiburtina stations. You can get cabs or take public transportation from one of those stations. It takes about 10-15 minutes longer.
I think the cheapest way into Rome if you're going to be using public transportation the day you arrive in Rome (Busses, Metro, Trams) is to buy a BIRG ticket for the first day.. it will get you into town on the FR-1 (NOT on the Leonardo) and be good until midnight for all the public transportation in Rome. Should cost about 6.5 euros
You could buy a BTI or a BIG or something else for the other days you're in Rome.
We just returned from Rome and my family of 5 used http://limoservicerome.com/ to transfer us from the airport directly to our apartment.
They were waiting for us upon our arrival to FCO and had a sign with our name on it. It cost 50 Euro and I considered it money well spent since they took us directly to our apartment.
Have a great time in Rome!

Remember that children ages 12 or less do not have to pay on the Leonardo Express, the train from FCO to Termini, so the answer depends partly on how old the family members are. - Marie
When I went to Rome with my daughter, I wanted to save money wherever I could. So we took the Leonardo Express and then took a taxi from Termini, in which we got ripped off. I returned from Rome a couple of days ago and used pre-reserved limo service to and from the airport and it was the best 100 euro I could have spent. We used Roma Limo; however, I'm sure any of the recommended services will work just as well. You just can't beat the peace of mind!
There were 4 of us traveling...but with lots of luggage (not all mine!). We opted for a limo rather than taxi or transit. It was worth the 80 euro to have someone meet us at the airport and get us to the hotel. We happily used the busses and metro once we had our feet on the ground and had a sense of where things were. There are definantly cheaper transportations, but to and from the airport it may be worth having a little help with luggage and direction. We left with even more luggage than we arrived with! sandi
