There is a review of the Mach II here on Slowtrav, along with some other hotels near FCO. There is also a section called Arriving in or leaving from FCO that you might find helpful.

Hello, Cathy M,
My family and I spent a night at the Cancelli Rossi in July 2001. We got there very late at night, close to the midnight, and left early the next morning after breakfast. So there is nothing much to talk about except the rooms we used. Two rooms given us were both severely simple; my daughter's comment: they were like the cells in a convent. The walls must have been very thin; we could hear not only planes flying low above us but also people walking and talking in corridors. As a result we spent a sleepless night. There was no bar open in the hotel at that late hour of our arrival. And the immediate neighbourhood was all dark, and we didn't find any restaurant or store to buy anything to eat from. The rooms had very powerful airconditioners, though. This was all in 2001.

We stayed at the Mach 2 on our first trip to Italy. It didn't helop that I was violently ill. The bathroom door did not fully open and it made my emergency trips to the commode, when every split second counted, perilous indeed. The beds (we got two twins) were designed for twins of about age 7. I would not repeat and it was expensive as all get out for the quality delivered.

try eurohouse inn fiumicino. there is also a wonderful restaurant across the driveway. also lovely small fishing town/harbour within 15-20 min walk away well worth visiting. rooms are very nice with queensized bed and twin beds in another room-also complete kitchenette-keyed entry gate-parking space in front of your steps-extraordinary owners, Francesca and her mom. shuttle available 24 hours. we will return. and beautiful marble floors throughout-also semiprivate small terrace and yard in back.

I stayed at the Mach II many years ago. Not very nice in terms of rooms and comfort. Also not very near the airport (I may recall about 15 minutes drive).

Watch out for the taxisto go there: make sure they apply the correct fare otherwise you will end up paying even more than if you stayed at the Hilton ! (which is right out of the terminal).

You can stay at the beach and be very close to the airport.....I usually use La Sirenetta but there are a dozens of places in Fregene, Ostia or Fiumicino.
La Sirenetta - Lido di Ostia

You can also book it through Venere.com

The 2 hotels in question are sister hotels located next dooor to each other. Altho we've stayed at the Cancelli Rossi twice, the last time was several years ago and we wouldn't go back. IF the area is quiet I could stand the spartan room, but IF there are groups of kids nearby or any late night arrivals it's impossible to sleep. Frown

Please believe me when I tell you it doesn't matter how late your arrival is or how early your departure. If you aren't staying at the Hilton there is no such thing as "near" the airport.

The Mach 2 and the Cancelli Rossi Hotel are only about 5 miles closer than a Rome Hotel. For years they were literally the only game in town. Then the Hilton built a location at the airport. If $$ is an issue join the Hilton Honors club - you can save significantly that way.

Or stay at the Sheraton out at EUR - you'll be as close as if you stayed at the Mach2 or Rossi.

We always stay in central Rome our last night. It is so worth it to have one last walk through the piazzas. We have never missed a flight, we have always just booked a car service the night before.

Thanks....I suspected that these were poor choices.

We decided to book with Hilton...184E for two twins. Not to bad. We can walk to airport and that is comforting.

Thanks again for all your information and ideas.

Good choice. The Hilton at FCO is wonderful (if you've never stayed there. The service is great, the rooms are chic, the services are exact. It's also extremely quiet.

The restaurant could use some help, but after all, it's a Hilton. The air conditioning is fabulous if you end up shopping in Rome on a hot final day and end it at the airport.

It's actually a great place to ease back into being REALLY American (sob)!

I don't know if you're still looking for a hotel (I've been traveling and just catching up on recent threads now), but my recommendation, if you don't want to spend the money for the Hilton, is the Satellite Palace in Ostia. When Alitalia cancelled my flight in early April, that's where they put us up and it wasn't bad; it's a large, modern four-star hotel with a decent restaurant and friendly staff. Depending on how much time you have, you can walk around the town and to the beach and there are two small supermercados nearby if you need snacks. They have a complimentary airport shuttle that starts at 6:30am, just leave yourself time in case it runs late.

My ragazzo uses the Cancelli Rossi when he needs an inexpensive room near the airport, and he booked it for me once. He's a man and perhaps doesn't realize that what works for him doesn't work for me. As others have mentioned, it was very spartan and the area is dark and quiet at night. I was a woman traveling alone and didn't feel very comfortable there and wouldn't stay there again, especially now that I know about the Satellite Palace (www.satellitepalacehotel.com).
