Hi everyone,

Since the topic of the Italian trains and on-line reservations seems to always pop up, I thought I'd just let you know that I booked my "ES" trains today for Florence to Bologna, and Parma to Venice. It was very easy to do (easy registration, which I got my password within minutes).

The one interesting thing I noticed is that for the Florence-Bologna ride I was able to choose the tickless way, where as the other ride I had only 2 choices, so I chose the "self-service machine ticket collection," which should be pretty easy to do.

I hope this will help others.

The ticketless option is available only on top trains, those whose conductors have a small wireless computer to retrieve the ticket data from a central server and print it.

All my train rides are on the "top trains" ES trains, which is why it's strange I didn't have that choice.

Parma-Venice must have had a change of trains, and Ticketless travel is only available for trips without a change.

Thanks andres for the information. Yes, I'll be changing trains in Bologna. Hopefully the ticket machine will be easy to use.

the ticket machines are extremely easy to use, and you can choose to do it in english if you're italian isnt great. just makes sure to still get to the station a bit early as there can be lines. all you need to get the tickets is the name of the trenitalia account, and the PNR number (I think it was PNR... or some abbriviation like that anyways).

The lines will likely be shorter at the ticket machines that do not accept cash...

Thanks for the information on the ticket machines. Will hunt one down that uses credit cards, although I'm not paying just picking them up.

8 days and counting!

Piggybacking a related question: Does anyone know if the Pisa Airport station have one of these machines ? According to

http://www.trenitalia.com/en/orari_biglietti/guida_acquisto/distributore.html

It does NOT.

Train ticketing machines are located in the train stations. Some airports have travel agencies and TrenItalia ticket counters.

So if a station does not have these machines but does have an ticket office, I can "pick-up" ticket reserved on trenitalia.com ?
