Does anyone have suggestions for some good family trattorias of other restaurants in the Oltrano neighborhood? In our other trips to Florence we have eaten on the other side of the river. We are staying at the Viva Hotel Pitti Palace and looking for good eats in that neighbor hood...such as gelato, bakeries and anything else. Ciao!

Have you looked at Slow Trav restaurant reviews for Florence, which are divided by district? Also Diva'srestaurant list for the Oltrarno is very reliable.

Oh and Maureen has a travel note about the San Frediano area of the Oltrarno, including eating suggestions.

BTW: If you do a search on the message board, you will get better results with the spelling "Oltrarno". Wink

Ciao

-Casalinga - fantastic service and excellent, traditional dishes in a casual atmosphere. personally i LOVE this place.
-Osteria Santo Spirito - get the gnocci and sit outside.
both are on piazza santo spirito (casalinga's around the corner)

there's another li'l trattoria down on Via di Santo Spirito. i forget the name. its NOT Il Cantinone (terrible service and too expensive), the one i'm thinking of is farther down on the right. pretty good house wine, friendly service and good food.

Lately it occurs to me
what a long, strange trip its been

Trattoria 4 Leoni is a fun one - it's gotten well trafficked by tourists lately, but the food is still good and their outdoor setting in the middle of the tiny Piazza della Passera is great. Click here

I'm a big fan of the Mangiatoia for cheap meals - it's a take out and eat in place with pizza, pasta, roasted meats, etc. We ate there 3 times in 4 days last May because it's simple, easy, and good value. Need a break from the big meals now and then. Can't remember the street name now...but if you're standing in front of the Pitti Palace looking toward the street, walk left down that main road a couple blocks and it's right there on the left.

oh! i almost forgot: Forno!
on the south side of the ponte vecchio, on via de' guicciardini, just north of piazza di felicita on the east side of the street, there is a bakery that makes the best schiacciata in the city, IMHO. i would go there every morning for a big slice (about $.70) fresh outta the ovens.

forgive me, i never learned the names/addresses of these places. i believe there is a glove store next door.

There's always Osteria alla Mescita (alla mescita being wine by the glass; wander the nearby rennaissance palazzos and look for the small, knee-level, arched openings (le mescite) where owners sold wine by the glass produced from their own vineyards to passersby. You laid your money on the sill, it was whisked away, and out came a glass of wine! Those were the days...

The http://www.osteriasanniccolo.com/guenda/ing/index-ing.htm is a deconsecrated chapel, with an evocative, convivial, if occassionally rowdy downstairs atmosphere. Traditional Florentine peasant food, and all the great wines the area is known for. Call to reserve.

We loved 4 Leoni as well, but can also highly recommend Borgo Antica on Piazza Santo Spirito. The food was excellent, service was friendly, atmosphere was fun (sat outside under their awning at tables that were close enough to be called family style and really enjoyed talking to the couple we were next to) and prices were very reasonable.

My favorite places on the Oltrarno are Celestino (Pizza S. Felicita'), Osteria Vasari (Via de' Bardi) and Il Brindellone (just beyond Piazza del Carmine). Up the hill beyond the city walls is the highly recommended da Ruggero--easily reached by cab or bus.

I second the rec. for Casalinga. Overall, I would have to say that lunch here was the most satisfying meal I had on our trip. You will not find any unique creations, but the food, the atmosphere, and the service define "classic neighborhood trattoria". This is honest, soulful Tuscan cuisine at a VERY fair price.

We enjoyed eating at the Osteria del Cinghiale Bianco at 43R Borgo S. Jacopo. Their website is cinghialebianco.it and their phone is 055.21.57.06. Check out their website for a look at the menu and an introduction to the owner. They have a loyal clientele from all over the world (as they will tell you on their site!) and I am planning on going here again when I am in Firenze in June and September. We couldn't get in the first time and stopped in the next day to make a reservation. They are closed on Wednesdays.

Another recommendation for Casalingha.

Also Bar San Agostino on Via San Agostino is our now favorite bar in Firenze. Strong caffe (mokkarrabia brand) and freshly baked all day pastries.

For modern food that pay attention to traditional flavors try Beccofino.

Has anyone eaten at Trattoria Pandemonio on Via lel Leone? We ate there our last night in Florence. It was recommended at our hotel. We were told that their specialty was steak. Although I didn't have the steak (it was rather expensive) I did have grilled beef with arugula which was good. And their appetizers and home made pasta was good..my daughter loved their shrimp risotto.
Overall, it was a good experience, but the most expensive dinner on our trip. On our trip we always looked for good value and places that weren't geared towards tourists, but this may have been our one exception. Anyone know it?

I know of it but I've never eaten there. My apartment was just down the street, so I passed by a few times. I think the rental agent had mentioned it to me as good but expensive. So many other good restaurants within two blocks of my apartment (on the corner of via del Leone and via del'Orto) that I never tried that one.
