Does Italy have an approximation of the French resource, Gites de France, which lists hundreds, maybe thousands, of private homes with rooms to let? It makes traveling through France slowly such a joy, and I wish a similar thing existed for Italy. Anyone know?
All the gites I have ever used were cottages or apartments in the country rather than rooms for rent. In Italy agriturismo is that sort of thing. Some have rooms, B&B or more, some are apartments and some are houses. They just have to also have some agricultural activity. You'll get the best result if you search on agriturismo (insert region or province)and you will find hundreds in most areas and thousand overall. Some sites won't have English because Italians also use them, as the French use gites.
Have you looked at the main Slowtrav site? There are reviews of hotels, agriturismi, B&Bs, and lists of helpful resource books. You can also have a look at the Slowtrav classifieds.
I agree, agriturismo.com is a very good resource... Pauline, how about adding it to the Agriturismo links pages? www.agriturismo-marche.it is also a good (unofficial) resource for agriturismo in Le Marche region.
