I'm in the beginning stages of planning a family trip to Italy in November--boy am I glad I found these boards. I'm already hooked!

Based on several recommendations on this site, I am getting ready to book an apartment at the Palazzetto Da Schio for our stay in Venice. Just a question about the location in Dorsoduro--it appears that it is just a short traghetto ride across the Grand Canal to Piazza San Marco. Can anyone give me an idea of how long the boat ride is and how far a walk it is to the Square? When we were in Venice 18 years ago, my husband and I stayed at the Hotel Flora, and he loved being able to get up early and just step out the door and have such a short walk to St. Marks. I just love the look and reviews of this apartment, and the Dorsoduro area sounds charming. Any input?? I'll be back for more over the next months, so thank you all in advance!

If taking a vaporetto you can either take the long way or the shorter, but with a bit of walking to the stop.

Long route: take the 82 from Zattere to Vallaresso, but you would have to go across the canal to Giudecca along the way. Probably too long, but scenic!

The shorter vaporetto route would be to walk to the Salute stop and take the number 1 across the water, only about 2-3 minutes boat time.

Or you can walk across the Accademia bridge. To walk to San Marco it should take 20 minutes or so.

Not sure about the traghetto, as I haven't taken a traghetto this far down the Canal. Up around San Toma it's about five minutes to cross.

Thank you, Krix. After taking the #1 across the canal, how long a walk is it to St. Mark's?

MercersX5,
When we stayed in the DaSchio apartment, we just walked to the Accademia bridge and on over to San Marco square. The view from the Accademia bridge is beautiful! I think it was probably a 15-20 minute walk from the apartment to San Marco.

We didn't take the traghetto, but you could and it would probably shorten the walk by 5-10 minutes.
The Salute stop is your closest Vaporetto stop.It is about a 5 min. walk from the apartment. Then take the No. 1 vaporetto to Valleresso and walk into San Marco. Sometimes you have to wait for 20 min. or so until the Vaporetto bus arrives. So, most of the time it was really just as fast to walk to San Marco square.

We really enjoyed being out walking in Venice. There are new and beautiful sights around every corner and on every bridge!

Have a great time! Laurie

The Vallaresso stop is basically off the southwest corner of Piazza San Marco- a 2 minute walk.

The traghetto is a quick and easy way to cross the canal; as a courtesy to those who must use them to get to work or school we try to avoid them during "rush hours". l love the vaporettos and often use them for the sheer delight of being on the water, but it is indeed a quick and easy walk from either the Accademia Bridge or Valleresso. remember the Grand Canal snakes through Venice; you can cut across Venice on foot and find distances are often surprisingly short especially for good walkers.

Do take time to explore and appreicate the many beauties and wonders of Dorsoduro and San Polo. We stay in San Polo and literally can go days without ever crossing the canal; from the Rialto markets to the Accademia Bridge, Zattere along the Giduecdca Canal and campos like Santa Margherita and San Polo the other side of the canal is a delight. And that is just mentioning a few of the outdoor highlights. Ruth
