Hello
My husband and are planning a mid-march trip to Venice for 4/5 days. We are fairly avid home chefs and have rented apartments on previous trips to Italy, including one at Il Gaidello (which we found here). We did not cook at all on a trip to florence. We cooked lunch most days at Gaidello. I am concerned about cost and quality of food in Venice. We like to be away from the tourist spots, and enjoy exploring and seeking out locals type places. We are definetly budget travelers. Is it worth the extra cost for an apartment in Venice to cook for ourselves (I love going to markets) or will we want to eat out to enjoy the food and place (can you eat dinner and drink for less than 20 euro per person)? The apartment may be 25 euro or more than a hotel, nothing specific choosen yet, and we would probably do a cheap room (shared bath, etc.). Any advice appreciated. Oh and we are buying the venice eats book for sure.

Thanks!

sara

Venice Rentals is the Slow Trav link to Venice reviews

Paola's place is my review of the apartment we ahve rented twice in Venezia. Paola has access to other apartments in case this one is full. Her palce is well suited for cooking and is a great little spot. It is minutes away from Da Pinto, Do Mori and the fish market.

In Venice, you can get fabulous produce and seafood at the Rialto markets. When I was there last May, I deeply regretted not having a kitchen!

We were also watching our budget, and ate very well and fairly inexpensively at simple restaurants. Read the Venice restaurant recommendations, and search the Board for some great previous threads on eating in Venice. Enjoy!

I am not sure how hotel prices compare to apartment prices - but we do have two Venice vacation rentals (one an agency, one is rent from owner) on our SlowTrav Favorites:

I definitely prefer an apartment over a hotel, and apartment prices are usually less than or on par with hotel rooms.

You can eat for less than 20 Euro per person in Venice. Pizza and house wine, no problem. One course instead of two and house wine, no problem. With planning, you can have a pretty fine meal for 40 Euro for two. But I would still get the apartment!
