Everything a tourist would be involved in should be open--as far as I know, only schools and government offices close.

We were in Italy for this holiday last year.

We were driving and noticed a lot of extra traffic on the roads as well as a lot of closed gas stations.

Its a Holiday and last year everything was closed. All stores and some resturants. We were in Vicenza at the time and the local supermarkets and even the Tuesday market did not come. If you're In Italy on this day make it a day of rest or something fun as a down day.

As it will be on a Friday this year, expect mas exodus out of the cities for the weekend but tourist places should be open.

I was in Siena for this holiday a couple of years ago. Most shops along the main street were open, and there was a neat parade and ceremony near the Duomo. It might be fun to find out what is planned for Milan and attend.

Was in Rome last year for this, many busses re-routed, seem to run on a Sunday/Holiday schedule. Restaurants were mostly open, stores (my Punto supermarket), many museums, were not.
