I need some gift ideas for a family conisting of a father, mother, boy (7), and a boy (16) who live in Sardinia. I live in Indiana so I could bring Indy500 things but I didnt know if people in Sardinia watch racing. If you could please give me some ideas that would be much appreciated. Ciao!
Look in the Everything About Travel Forum - small gifts to bring topic. We've been discussing this recently. It also has a link to other discussions. I'm bringing baseball, football and university T-shirts and hats; 2 bottles of good California wine, Burts Bees and other US toiletries, American candy, chocolate and gum for the kids to try; apron with American BBQ motif (saw a cute one at Old Navy). We have a big extended family we're visiting. My kids want to bring Smores ingredients to share with their Italian cousins. I think the Indy500 stuff would be cool; especially since it's from your state.
From when I was a kid with my diplomat parents, an oldie: one of the best gifts almost anywhere outside the States is good American towels; the bigger and plusher, the better. Towels elsewhere are usually small and thin; or, if large and quality, hideously expensive.
Towels have the advantage of stuffing your suitcase with bulky lightweight items; then you give them away, and you have a nice empty suitcase for filling up with Italian stuff for the trip back. Anyhow, I did this for some particularly nice people in 1998, and it was a great success.
Towels migh please some of the ladies, but make sure they look different. My mum would find it strange to receive plain towels, even if fluffy. Do not forget that Italy is a fashion designer country. People might have Missoni towels in their cupboard. I was very pleased to receive some towels from Australian guests because they were embroiderd with koalas and kangaroos. Nice good quality embroidery, but they were not more fluffy than what I had. I also received some lovely linen tea towels with aborigenal patterns.
