We arrived in Rome on June 25 and spent 8 nights before heading north. There wasn't a cloud in the sky the whole time and while it was very warm, it was not unbearable. Our children would dunk their hats in the fountains to cool their heads. It was crowded but many said not as bad as prior years.

Marian, we were in Rome mid-June. It was hot - and forced us to slow our pace some and search out shady areas in which the kids could play. Though the fountains offered relief. As far as taking the kids out of school, I've done it twice now (once in June - they missed the last week, and once in November for three days). They definitely didn't miss a thing in June - by that point in the school year, homework had finished and the kids spent the afternoons watching movies . I think they learned much more in Italy.

We finished off our trip to Italy in mid June in Rome. It was certainly the muggiest place we went and hot, but we managed fine. We were so lucky with the weather, about four showery days in a more than 4 week trip. (A few thundery, wet nights). We took our daughter out of school for five weeks in total which bothered me a bit. I have to be honest and say I have noticed a slight set back in her confidence, but it is her first year at school and was only term 2 for her.(She is 5 1/2) She has caught up with her work fine (yes, they are all bright!) and she got so much out of the trip and her Italian is very cute. One of the best things about our trip was that we spent five weeks together as a family, 24-7. That bonding has made us all much happier and closer than ever. It is worth it for that alone. Have this special trip together, my mum died suddenly last Christmas and 2 days ago my husband was in a nasty car accident. I plan on taking every opportunity that comes my way. You can do bits of school work each afternoon or evening, such as writing about what was special about the day, mapping your journey, measuring how far you travel each day and so on. Go and enjoy it and take many, many photos!

One of the best ways to check on weather anywhere is to log onto a weather site such as Wunderground or AccuWeather, and check what the weather was like at your destination on your dates a year ago, two years ago, three years ago. It is easy to do and will give you a good idea of what is typical.

Thanks Kim, he will recover, which is more than can be said for the car. And we are going to lose thousands as the insurance company is paying out less than the car is worth and it wasn't even his fault..... Grumble, grumble. We could have another trip to Italy for what we will have to pay to replace the car. Where are their priorities!?!?!?

I had the same questions about June weather in Italy. We just returned from a wonderful 2-week trip to Italy in June, and we were fortunate...it was warm, but in a pleasant way...there were only brief periods where it was unbearably hot, for example, while riding a public bus in Rome, which was crowded and NOT air-conditioned, I was soaked in sweat! But most of the time the weather was pleasant.
However, it all depends on your luck. I heard from many people that the previous year, Italy experienced an unusually hot summer, and even in June it was unbearable. So, you just never know!
I think you should go, and try to be flexible with your schedule...even with a child, try to do things in the cooler parts of the day, and return to your hotel (air-conditioned hotel) during the hottest part of the day for a nap. Then take advantage of the cooler evenings in Italy...Even children will enjoy the excitement of getting to see things at night. Just make sure the child gets a nap in the afternoon so that they won't be too cranky staying out at night.
Have fun!
We were in Rome, Sorrento, Florence, Siena, and Venice. Of all these places, the hottest city for us was Florence, but it was still enjoyable.

Last year June was HOT!!! I probably would not book a place June-Aug. in a bigger city without a.c. No matter the weather (we had LOTS of heavy rain in Tuscany in May this year), it's still great to be in Italy.
