Hello to all,
I'm back again to ask more questions.
I want to rent a car near Tivoli, and I'm going to use autoeurope but I have a problem, the only place they have the car I want is at Via Pietro Ottoboni Rome. Can anyone tell me how far this is from Tivoli and is the street within Rome's GRA?
I have already checked via michelin and mappy.com and they don't recognise the address.
I would really appreciate any help you can give me!

I am sorry that you are having so much trouble with the internet....

According to Via Michelin, the Via Pietro Ottoboni is just off the Via Tiburtina, a few blocks east of the Stazione Tiburtina. It is well inside the GRA, probably 5km. However it is quite near the beginning of the A24, where it begins (or ends) at the Circonvallazione Tiburtina.

Are you coming from downtown Rome? If so, it might be simpler to pick the car up at one of the offices near Via Veneto and the Villa Borghese. It is a pretty straight shot out to the A24 and on to Tivoli from there.

Hi Jim
I was thinking of going straight to my hotel in Tivoli and picking up the car the next morning. If I get it when we arrive on Fri. and drive to the hotel it will just sit in the parking lot over night since most of Tivoli is walkable. So I thought I would save an extra day on the rental? What do you think? If I do this I will be going into Rome to pick up the car on Sat. and I wanted to avoid heavy traffic.
The problem with my locations is that AE is not listing any automatics at the other locations!
And I absolutely need an automatic.

I would be very surprised to hear that AutoEurope wouldn't have an automatic at the Via Veneto locations of Europcar and Avis.....I would double check.

Tivoli itself is walkable but the Villa Adriana is not in Tivoli...it is in the valley closer to Rome. You can get there by bus, but it is more convenient by car.

A few questions: Where are you before you go to Tivoli? How were you going to get to Tivoli? How were you going to get back to pick up the car the next day? How much will it cost in money and time to make that extra trip?

Hi Jim
Via Veneto is no where near I am going to be. I am flying into FCO the morning of Apr. 2, and we are staying one night in Tivoli. I'm trying to get an opel safira and it's $1820 to pick up at the airport as opposed to $1578 if picked up at Via Pietro Ottoboni. That's a difference of $240. I can hire a shuttle to the hotel for alot less than that.
I also believe the hotel has a shuttle that goes around to different sites.
Thanks so much for responding and helping me out, I guess I just have to weigh my options and decide if the $240 is worth the extra.
By the way I was surprised that I got the lower price if I pick up at Via Pietro O. and drop off at FCO.

Kam1, I apologize in advance for butting in the discussion, but I was puzzled by the reason behind renting from Autoeurope. I've done some price shopping on rental cars in Rome, and each time, I find the Autoeurope price to be at least twice of that of Thrify (and that's including all the excess waiver insurances with zero deductible and VAT). Is there something about Thrifty car rental that I don't know?

Hi Steve
Your not butting in! I have checked the thrifty website 2 or 3 times and every time I did there were no automatics except in really small cars.
There are 4 of us traveling together and we need a car that has some room in it. I will go in and check again in case I overlooked something.
You said they were inclusive but some of the websites list cdw and theft but they are only partial insurrances and you still have to pay a whopping deductible. Thank you.

Hi again Steve
I just checked thrifty again and the largest car they had in automatic was a compact. That just won't do for all of us with baggage.
But I do appreciate your trying to help.

Now that we know you are going to Tivoli on your first day in Italy, the picture becomes somewhat clearer.

>>I was surprised that I got the lower price if I pick up at Via Pietro O. and drop off at FCO.<<

The airport surcharge (13 percent at this time, I think) only applies to pickups at an airport, not dropoffs.

>>I guess I just have to weigh my options and decide if the $240 is worth the extra.<<

And it is not only the money that you should consider....you should also take into account time and convenience--sometimes more valuable commodities on a vacation trip than money.

If you are going to depend on the Hotel Sirene shuttle service, I would recommend that you let them know exactly what transportation that you will require--Villa Adriana and return, transfer to car rental office on Via Pietro Ottoboni, etc.--and get them to confirm the transfers in writing.

Also check carefully what a car or taxi to Tivoli from the airport would cost; I have to believe it will be at least double (or more) the rate to the center of Rome.

I would also suggest that you call the AutoEurope 800 number (and the Thrifty number also) instead of relying 100% on what it says on the web site in terms of price and car availability. I have sometimes come up with better deals by talking to a live representative then I could find on the web site. (Of course sometimes the opposite is true also.)

I am taking into consideration all of the above things you mentioned. I agree that I have to decide if it's worth the aggravation of driving into Rome. We did that on our last trip (dropped off the car in Via Veneto) and I swore I would never do that again! I haven't called thrifty, so I may try that. I called autoeurope 3x and they keep telling me they have no automatics unless I go for a mercedes station wagon @ about $2300. Thats alot to pay.
Another consideration is that I have rented in Europe twice from AE and have never had a problem. I have also gotten the car I ordered both times which is why I don't want to specify an opel or nissan because it will be just my luck that I will get it! I am going to wait until tommorrow, when the other couple who will be traveling with us will be here, and I can put the question to them and give them all the pros and cons. I do appreciate your input, especially about Hadrian's Villa, Tivoli, and Villa d'Este not being that close together. All the sites I've been into make it sound as if they are very near. The last thing I want is to start off my vacation with alot of turmoil.
Thank you again

Just to make it clear...

The Villa d'Este is in the middle of the town of Tivoli. The Villa Adriana is probably 4 or 5 miles from the center of Tivoli, down the hill into the valley towards Rome.

Thanks for the information. Renting an automatic can be a challenge.

Here's the Thrifty Car rental terms:
Renters financial responsibility for the Thrifty vehicle is reduced to between EUR 775 - 2,065 with purchase of Theft and PDW.
Purchase of Super PDW and Super TPW supplement at time of rental reduces responsibility to zero. The combined cost of super PDW and TPW is about $10-$15 Euro a day.

Pauline, I think it's a myth that AutoEurope is the only agency offering zero deductible insurance on rental car. Could we correct that in the FAQ for car rental?

Hi Steve
I just compared thrifty to autoeurope and here's the difference:
I used a compact automatic picked up & dropped off at FCO
Thrifty 1521.35 = $1925.52 with super cdw & tpw

Autoeurope $1114.72 with 0 deductable.

Thrifty is $800+ more than AE

Thanks Kam1! I will look into AutoEurope. My mistake in comparing only daily rate.
