My family will be in Venice in late March. Will the dueling orchestras play in San Marco Square in the evening or is it too cold?

I was told in an email from the Quadri last year that they don't start playing outside until April 1, weather permitting, and don't play into the evening and late hours until April 21. Again, weather permitting.

The Caffè Chioggia will have pleasant jazz in the evening. If it is warm enough you can sit outside, as the piano is built into the wall and the player is comfortable inside. It is actually in the Piazzetta, the area between the lagoon and Piazza S. Marco. It is also the café where Kate Hepburn had her rendezvous with Brasano Brazzi in Summertime. Several years ago on a cold, very foggy February night my wife and left Harry’s around midnight. As we passed the Piazzetta, we heard the strange sound of piano playing somewhere in the fog. We couldn’t resist. We were the only ones there in the mist with our hot brandies. It was very surreal – we felt like we stepped into a Fellini movie. It was wonderful. We’ll be there again this February. We can only hope for such good memories.

Let me offer a tip, however. During the day one of the most charming spots in Venice is the little back bar at the Florian. This is a spot loved and frequented by Venetians. There are just 3 (maybe 4) bar stools and two tiny tables against the wall. The prices here (same at the bar or small tables) are a fraction of those at tables on the Piazza or in the salons. The daytime bartender is Maurizio and he will take good care of you. Just walk in the front door straight past the maitre d’ (like you know what you are doing) into what looks like a service area. The bar is on the left.

Thank you, EVO. This sounds very nice. I appreciate the tip about the little back bar at the Florian, too!

We were in Venice last June and one of our favorite moments was listening to the dueling orchestras. We will miss this, but maybe we will find another favorite memory. Thank you! Laurie
