Since July 3 Venice in entirely covered by a wi-fi network free to use for all city residents.

The network can be accessed also by tourists at just 5 Euro per day. The access can be purchased on line at: www.veniceconnected.com

Nice isn't it ?!

And it really, really works! Smile

You can also buy Wi-Fi passes for 48 hours (€8) and a week'a worth for €15.

Woot!

How's the coverage? What happens when you connect to the network, does it bring up one of those screens where it lets you create an account and sign up for a plan (e.g., one day, one week, etc)? If that's the case, any idea if it's in English too?

Surprisingly enough most of your questions can be answered on veniceconnected.com.

It's fairly comprehensible, and actually intuitive. I tweeted using it yesterday!

The information on venniceconnected.com says that the locations for the service are Piazza San Marco and Parc San Giuliano. Is this information just outdated?

That is correct. That particular information is not up to date. The coverage is in effect city-wide.

The process for signing up and obtaining your code is correct, however.

I am finding the wi-fi a bit sketchy. It does work, but the bandwidth is iffy and you may find that it cuts out up and down the Grand Canal. Then, you must enter your ID and password each time you access it.

Please keep in mind that it's available in campi and along main thoroughfares, but rarely accessible from inside any building. It may act a bit differently depending on the device you have as well.

Good luck, do let us know how it works out.

Of course WiFi offered in your hotel should work well for Skype!

Do want to make sure folks aren't expecting Venice's wifi to work in their lodgings. But hotel wifi should compensate for that, however.
