| quote: quote: When we were moving to Italy for a year, Ken's cardiologist (who is at the top of the list here in SD) told him that some of the best cardiologists and heart care in the world is in Florence
I have heard similiar claims as well! In fact, my mom was on a flight to visit me, and she was sitting next to a an American doctor who was on his way to Italy for heart surgery. Obviously he felt that Italian Cardiology was superior.
Continuing in this claim is an ANSA article from today that spotlights the advances in Italian heart care. | | | | Posts: 1464 | Location: Rome, Italy; Zagreb, Croatia | Registered: 12 February 2003 |

| Tim, I didn't mean to offend but thanks for clarifying your position. As you indicated, it all goes back to a contamination issue to which no precautions were taken, aside from rubber gloves, during my hospital stay at the University of Florence. I had been on three doses of antibiotics for a stubborn UTI and, consequently, all my good bacteria was wiped out and, believe me, I have issues with my doctor here on that note. Also, it was never recommended that I take probiotics and never has been by any doctor that has prescribed antibiotics. I can't imagine why they would neglect to advise on something so simple.

What did they get sanctioned for? Remember liars, damn liars and statisticians Imagine setting up a video camera and marking down each and every driver that breaks any traffic rule. You want to bet how high the percentage would be? Would the raw numbers mean anything? | | | | Posts: 2100 | Location: Medio Vastese | Registered: 07 March 2006 |

Exactly, aside the more serious irregularities like dirty hospitals and expired medicines -Tony, I am not deniyng the faults of our system- there are also other kinds of irregulariries that are not as important as the others, like the hospital that got sanctioned because the drug cabinet was found open and not locked, the other one that had a security exit blocked by a sonogram machine, the other one in which a nurse has been found smoking in the bathrooms? Or the irregulariries tied to administrative matters as the triannual fire extingusher device check not booked yet? We had a great actor in the 30es and 40es, Petrolini, he was playing a caracter called Gastone that at a point would say "La statistica è quella cosa che dice che se te hai mangiato due polli e io nessuno, allora ne abbiamo mangiato uno per uno... ma io c'ho sempre fame!" "Statistic is that thing that say that if you ate 2 chickens and I didn't eat anything, then we have eaten one each...but I am still starving!" So, I will keep my trust in this system that has saved my family and friend's lives so many times and accept that in some cases there are things to make better, adjust and change. I remember that when I had my c sections in the hospital in Arezzo- public hospital mind you, and one of the best in Italy for neonatal care, there were advices in 12 languages, 7 of which in unknown -to me- alphabets, interpreters were available in all the languages. Free. To all. INCLUDING pregnant illegal immigrants. As someone said the Italian system is rated second after the French, as much as I know that there are things to fix, I am going to trust it in the future as I have done in the past. | | | | Posts: 2464 | Location: Cortona, Tuscany, Italia | Registered: 29 October 2002 |

DH was urgently hospitalized in Paris at the Hotel Dieu, one of the oldest hospital in Paris. Great care great service, boring hospital (like in Italy) but they surely saved his life, so I have nothing to complain. If I am sick and need hospitalization, I surely want to be here. Nowhere else in the world you'll find the best or the most famous doctors just working in the public hospitals, nowhere else. | | | | Posts: 2464 | Location: Cortona, Tuscany, Italia | Registered: 29 October 2002 |
