I am going through such red tape trying to rent a car on Sunday at Civitavecchia.Has anyone else found this a problem? What do the people disembarking the cruise ships do? Anyone else had problems...or is it just me trying to do it from Italy...and only 30 kms from the town.

I see that the autoeuorpe office is closed on Sunday. I would think that the cruise ship companies would have the answer.

Wow, finally got a car for Sunday...and after speaking to Katrina, Abe, Rose and Joe on the autoeurope 800 line. The problem is the software that doesnt allow one to actually make a booking if the office in Italy is (officially) closed on that day. With a 30 euro surcharge everything opens up!
Just call their free line 00800 22355 555 and then continue with the booking. They would be crazy to stay closed with several huge cruise ships in port and everyone wanting to book cars to explore this great Etruscan area.
