I know there are others (Cheryl!) who are experts in this area....
BUT... we did enjoy a very wonderful day in Bolsena and Bagnoregio (old village) last June. We met fellow slow travelers Wendyash and Ricardo in Bolsena, had lunch there, and then drove to Bagnoregio.
Wendy had researched lunch places and found a recommendation in Bolsena in a Cadogan guide... just a simple little family-type place, maybe the sort you are looking for. The name is Antica Trattoria del Corso on Corso della Repubblica, 41 (tel 0761/798078). We got a map at the tourist office and somehow ended up walking up and down the street a few times looking for it. The sign really just says Antica Trattoria. (Here's a link to a photo of Wendy and Richard in front of the restaurant... if you go, you'll know what you are looking for!)
We ordered a lot of food-- simple, good-- and it was relatively inexpensive. I remember the service being very attentive.
We had arrived early before Wendy and Richard and drove down to the lakefront. There are other restaurants there, a different ambiance than the older village.
From Bolsena it was an easy (and scenic) 15-20 minute drive up to Bagnoregio. I have heard of times with many tourists at the old village, but we didn't experience that right after lunch. Be prepared for a bit of a steep climb across the bridge. It's truly an amazing spot!
Here's a link to a website about Bolsena. The lake is the largest volcanic lake in Italy and it's an attractive place.
Kathy, This is great and just what I was hoping for. And I loved the picture too. (trying to keep from gushing.....)!
Unfortunately, there seem to be no others in this area for the first half of May. (sigh) I have posted on the Calendar, but no replies. I think we're a bit early this year.
Bob, Thanks for your imput too. I'll try to get the name of the place when we park!

Wow, Kathy, what a picture. Is it as deserted as it looks? Is the only way to get there across that daunting-looking foot bridge? But omigosh, what a photographic spot!
(Colleen, thanks for the spelling edit in the subject. My fingers go faster than my brain!)
