Yikes, I may be forced to stray from my usual diet of burgers, fries, and milkshakes this trip.

The LW wants us to engage in a culinary adventure based around local foods of these great cities. That dear soul just loves to add stress to our trip planning!

Please provide suggestions to help me expand my ample waistline, tickle my burger-dulled palate, and avoid the instense nagging that will result in my not being able to rattle off some speciality foods and drinks.

Help with "Pronunseeashawn" would be appeciated so I don't look like a complete fool when ordering. Looking a little foolish and stupid is okay since we will be badly dressed, loud, and sporting bad haircuts.

Florence and Rome have very different cooking styles, despite much overlap. Florence leans toward thick soups, roasts, and stews, while Rome goes for pastas and quick-cooked meats, as a rule. Naturally, the flagship dishes are the exact opposite: Florence vaunts the bistecca alla fiorentina, a humongous t-bone steak served very, very rare (or not at all), while Rome's meat symbol is coda alla vaccinara, oxtail stewed for hours with tomatoes and celery.

What time of year are you going? The food in both cities will vary according to the season.
