I read on a web site I am unfamiliar with that the dates for the Settimana Della Culture Roma in 2010 will be March 25-31. Can anyone confirm this? Thanks!
The website where I read the information about the March 2010 dates was http://www.infohostels.com I found that website when I googled Settimana della Cultura Roma 2010. All the other sites I checked list the 2009 dates of April 18-26.
This is what the website mentioned in my post above says:
"This year the annual week of culture organised by the ministry for culture (MiBAC) takes place from 25-31 March. During the event all state-run museums, galleries, monuments and archaeological sites across the country are open to the public free of charge and numerous exhibitions, performances, guided tours and other initiatives have also been organised for the occasion.
For a full list of events by region check the websit of the culture ministry www.beniculturali.it.
In Rome as in past years city council-run museums and galleries such as the Capitoline Museums, Trajan’s Markets and the Ara Pacis Museum are also taking part in the initiative. For a full list of participating sites see www.museiincomune.it
I wrote to the Ministerial Office of Public Relations and they said the dates will be set in January. So, check the website again then. In 2008 and this year, it fell after Easter; I'm hoping it will be earlier this year!

In both 2008 and 2009 it fell either one or two weeks after Easter - which in 2010 is 4 April. It will be interesting to see if that pattern continues.

Yes, that is how I am reading it. You are an amazing detective to have found this I must say.
These settimana della cultura are great if you happen to be in the city when they are going on. Free entrance to a lot of places where you would ordinarily have to pay an entrance fee, plus there are usually places that are not usually open that are open only for that week.
Do you know where we can get information about such places?
Well the two times I have been in Italy during the Settimana della Cultura it was before the days of the internet. I heard about them via the local newspaper or word of mouth.
They are really intended more for the local residents than for tourists I think. But the tourist office would know about them when the dates get a little closer I should think.
I just made reservations to visit the Galleria Borghese on April 20th. I had to pay the reservation charge, but the tickets were free! The April 16-25 dates would seem to be correct.
Dear All, I have just called 060606 that is the number to dial for any official information you may need from Comune di Roma. I confirm the "Settimana della Cultura in Roma" 2010 will be 16-25 Aprile Just one remark: book all your tickets in advance where possible otherwise lines will be untenable
I will be in Rome during this years cultural week and had a couple of questions I was hoping everyone could help me with. 1) How much more crowded will all the free sites be? 2) Is there any English language websites to see a list of what sites will be participating along with a list of any other special activities during the week? 3) Should I still make prior reservations at sites that allow it (Uffizi, Borghese, Academia for David?) Thank you in advance! Zack

Hi Zack, welcome to Slow Travel Talk.
I haven't been to Rome for Settimana della Cultura yet, but I just want to make sure you're aware that the Uffizi and Accademia are in Florence, not Rome, that given I do recommend reservations for both.
Thanks for your post Leonardo. I was happy when I found out that my upcoming trip will coincide with a few days of this year's Cultural Heritage Week - but I ignorantly forgot to factor in the crowd aspect.
I was there in '05 for a Bianca Notte and was at first thrilled at the prospect of free nighttime access to my favorite Musei Capitolini, until I saw the crowds! I couldn't even get close to the entrance. (But I did end up getting to hear Roberto Benigni recite Dante in Piazza Venezia to a massive crowd, so that sure was a treat). But I digress....
The places I was hoping for free access to are Musei Capitolini, Mercati di Traiano, Palatino, ed il Museo dell'Ara Pacis. Leonardo, is there anyway to make reservations for these? Or would that even help in anyway - vis a vis the crowds?
And what's the procedure anyway? Do the different venues just waive you in or do you still have to go to the ticket window first? Any tips on how to best navigate this would be greatly appreciated.
Grazie in anticipo!

4-Palatino + Colosseo http://www.ticketclic.it/Gb/index.cfm For this one maybe you can avoid to book on line, lines are quick and access is usually simple.

I'd like to have that information also if anyone knows.
Thanks Leonardo. I have been attempting to book reservations using the websites you listed. I have tried various dates (16-25 of April). I get a message that says "no events available for this show". One site said "open availability culture week-free access" but you can't click on the little shopping cart symbol. Do you know if this message means the sites are sold out, or that no reservations are being taken for that week? Or something else? Your help is very much appreciated.
I do not think so, I have tried also other dates and it actually seems not working properly you are right. Anyway you can contact Omniticket that directly manages tickets/reservations on-line for the different museums: info.ticket@omniticket.it Tel. orari ufficio (09.00-13.00 / 14.00-18.00) = +39 02 58140380
Let me know if it helps and what is the right policy/procedure
