Hello all, My husband and I will be leaving in 2 days for our trip to Italy. It is our fist time ever, and we are so excited about it, and this board just keeps fanning the flames! we will be flying into Rome, stay for 2 nights, then drive a rental car out to Asciano. I have said this previously on my first post, so sorry to repeat myself. Does anyone have any comments on the following itinerary: April 20 arrive Rome 4:00 pm, explore after check in, early dinner and bedtime Apr 21 Fri - Vatican and St. Peter's ( we'll try the Vatican at lunch time). we decided against the reserved tour because we weren't sure about our condition (we expect some jetlag coming from the West Coast) Sat - pick up car, drive to Montalcino ( maybe a winery tour if available?), before checking in at the villa (Agriturisimo Caliano thru Parker Villas) Sun, explore the neighborhood, maybe the Abbey at Buonconvento Mon Apr24 - Siena Tues Apr 25 Florence Wed Apr 26 leave free for either Florence again, or stay in our villa Thurs Apr 27 we want to drive to Pontedera ( check out the Amadei chocolates!!) and maybe see San Gimignano on the way Fri Apr 28 stay in Asciano Sat - drive back to Rome and see as much as able ,( we are staying around Termini Station while in the city) Tues May 2 - fly back Of course, we are not following this itinerary strictly, we like to take things as slow as possible, but at least have some options Please comment on any small towns that may be worth visiting in lieu of other big cities I've written in Of course we plan on eating and drinking our way through! I'm so excited, I do not know If I'll be able to work tomorrow! This board has been so good with ideas and teasers...Thanks for all your input!
That's quite a bit of territory for that much time. I'd concentrate on Rome and southern Tuscany (Montalcino area.) If you REALLY want to stick close to your descibed formula, I also recommend that you skip Siena (or Florence). Where are you picking up and returning the car? You might want to consider leaving it in Florence and training back. IMHO, the temptation to "see it all" the first time is understandable. To see so little of Rome and to rush through the other areas might frustrate you more than you think. When you go into the Vatican Museum, rent the audio tour. It won't be as good as a live guide, but it's pretty good.
