Would welcome ideas for what special holiday celebrations or activities we should seek out in Rome over Christmas week...other than the main historical sites. I know about the Pope's blessing at noon but what else should we not miss? And would welcome restaurant suggestions for dinner on Christmas Eve and Day . . . all week for that matter! We'll have five nights.
Paul, a fast search of the forum using "Rome Christmas" brought up many past threads with recommendations and people's experiences. It's a popular time in Rome, so yes, restaurant reservations are advised. Have you looked at our Restaurant Reviews on the main site, and Stella's list for Rome?
How lucky you are to be in Rome during Christmas I have spent the last 2 years in Rome for Christmas. I love it. It is much less commercial. I would suggest Unicum Restaurant near Santa Maria Maggiore for dinner. They have a piano player and the food is good and reasonable. Also, Da Mario near the Spanish Steps, a favorite of locals. Try to see the Scavi. You must have reservations! The nativity scene at St. Peter's is magnificient.
It is usually cold at night but dry and you can walk for miles. I really like this time of year because it is much less crowded and everyone is so friendly. You will enjoy the atmosphere, it is simply wonderful.
Best Regards for a most special trip, St. Monica

I have a blog about Rome called Eternally Cool. If you pay a visit & click on "Roman Holidays" on the menu in the right sidebar, you'll find 34 entries about Christmas & New Year's in Rome.
There's info about the Christmas fair in Piazza Navona, lots of photos, also info about Christmas rituals and so on.
