Hello everybody,

I am traveling to Italy in June/July and I was wondering if I could easily find pasteurized goat milk in Italy? My baby son is on goat milk because of repeated infections. I read that Italy produces and exports goat milk. Can we buy this in any supermarket or alimentari? Here in Montreal we have goat milk in the supermarkets and natural stores. We will be staying in Rome and then in Positano.

Thank you in advance on any info you provide on this. Smile

Anastasia,
I find goat milk (that I normally drink without having any problem with cow milk, just because I like it!) in supermarkets in Milan and in the area around Urbino (where I live) in supermarkets. Usually the milk is UHT (long preserving? sorry I don't know how you say that in English!).
I'm pretty sure you will have no problems in Rome even if you'll have to look for it a bit as small shops might not have it.
No idea about Positano, but I assume that if we have it in Urbino..... Wink

Thank you Nick!
I usually agree about UHT yuckness, but nowadays there are different techniques and some "UHT" milk don't taste as yucky as they did before!

In Milano (and in Tuscany as well, though not in all plce neither in Milano nor in Tuscany) there is also the Amalattea pasteurized goat milk.

Goat milk can vary greatly in taste depending on the source - at least I've noticed that to be the case from my consumption at various places in the US and Canada (there was a time for several years I had regular access to goat milk straight from a farm). What does your pediatrician suggest? I'd try to have a backup feeding plan in case your baby does not like Italian goat milk.

Well, the alternative is to bring dried or evaporated milk. However this for sure has a different taste from fresh milk we are usually buying. The other thing is that we have to bring a stock of it.
Last year he was on cow milk and we travelled to Italy. I have noticed that the cow milk had a different taste as well, but the baby didn't have any problem with that. He hates soya milk, so this is not a choice.

It sounds like he will be at least 18 months at the time of this trip? That sounds like much less of a concern in that case, because he can eat so many other foods for a balanced diet. Can he eat cow's milk yogurt and cheese without a problem?

He will be 2.5 years old.
He likes milk a lot and drinks a good quantity per day, so if there is goat milk available, that would be the best.

In my small city of 45000 I saw goat milk at the supermarket Monday in the cold case. You can buy dehydrated milk at pharmacies, and there is evaporated milk in the baby food aisle at the supermarket. There are loads of yoghurts, and in particular the lovely Greek Total brand yoghurt.
