For all those who are living in Rome or that might be here for an extended stay over the next 2-3 months, please take a look at this.
The International Wine Academy at the Spanish Steps is offering a course on wine:
1ST Level: Get to know, appreciate and Choose the right wine
The reason why I am posting this, is that in order for this course to run there needs to be a minimum of 4 people signed-up. At the moment nobody is signed up for it. Myself and another friend of mine plan on signing up this week, however we need more people to take the course for it to run. If anyone is interested, below you will find the information about the course.
Lesson 1. 1/29 A systematic approach to wine tasting. Lesson 2. 2/5 What changed the Italian wine making scene, wine tasting techniques. Lesson 3. 2/12 How to read a label, the legal status of wine (DOCG/DOC/IGT/vini da tavola). Lesson 4. 2/19 Philloxera and other wine pests and diseases, most important grape varieties. Lesson 5. 2/26 White and red wine vinifications, different, closures, wine pests & deriving faults. Lesson 6. 3/4 Sparkling wine and desert wine production. Lesson 7. 3/11 Wine storage and wine service. Lesson 8. 3/18 Principles of food and wine matching (theory and practice).
Hi Tony, I will be back in Rome on the 27th of January in just enough time to join in on the wine class, however I would miss the final three classes. Do you think they would be willing to give me a slight break on the fee and still include me as one of the required 4 person minimum? Elizabeth

I have no clue. I am not to familiar with them yet. I have only been there once before for a happy hour wine tasting. I would contact them and ask. Let's cross our fingers and hope that they agree.

Hey Tony, let me know how it goes. I actually know the Director of the Academy and can attest to its professionalism. And then we can compare notes . I am taking the really serious professional wine sommelier course at the hilton - i have my first big exam in 2 weeks! I love learning about wine, although 3 hours of class in the Italian language and then the wine language gives me a headache! but most of all i just want that cool tastevin sommelier cup to wear around my neck!!
Carmel, that is amazing! I hope it all works out for you. I have been over to the academy once. I went for the happy hour wine tasting and I really liked the place and felt really comfortable with the instructor that was serving us the wine. I realy look forward to taking this class.

Tony, enjoy the classes. Rob and I were given a tour of the facility when we were in Rome this past Oct.
The place is lovely and they seem to have it nicely set up, with the classroom downstairs from the front desk and the lovely livingroom upstairs. There is a library and an intimate diningroom where they serve lunch and dinner to the members. The institute had three, should be four now, rooms for members to stay in, for a fee. This fee seemed very reasonable to me, and the location is devine. Membership as I recall was only 24€ per person. Anyway, enjoy the classes and we look forward to hearing what you have to say. (We think we may be on the short side of wine knowledge to be members. At least that is what Rob said the other night when we were discussing our Rome 2004 trip. I don't know if he is correct, but there definately is room to learn. I do know we like wine, we love wine, and we drink wine. Chianti, Barolo, Amarone's you name it....) cheeks rosie from the wine
Anyway good luck and cincin

From what I could see, the rooms will/should be lovely. And their view most likely will look out on all the goings on on 'The Steps'. The rooms' charges didn't seem to be out of line at all, either. W.
