Well, I can definitely scratch the Chiaia - it's 164 euro/nt for two people - the 144 was for single use of a double room.

i stayed in modern Pompei outside the ruins at a bare-bones, nice Hotel right by the train station for 58 euros a night for a double room. it is 68 euros a night for inseason. Here is my review: http://www.slowtrav.com/italy/hotels/review.asp?n=villa+dei+misteri&s=pompeiyou can get to the Archeological Museum as we did by taking the Circumvesuviana train to main staion at Piazza Garibaldi and then taking the subway to the new Museum stop in the basement. You didn't even have to go outside. Obviously access from here to Pompeii ruins is good. You jsut walk to the porta Marina Gate. You can take the Circumvesuvian to Sorrento to shop and catch the ferrries to Capri. Hydrofoil leave every hour. Unless you are going to Naples to see Naples for some reason, this could be a viable and cheaper alternative. You can still see the sights in Naples duing the day if you watn to and go back to Pompei at nigh6t. The Circumvesuviana runs from 6 am to midnight.

If your going to be there for five nights you might want to investigate an apartment (B&B). search for B&B Naples Italy. A good area to stay is the Vomero, lots of stores resturants and easy access to the musem via subway or cable car

By the way after the Museum don't miss Naples Underground. It is located in Spaccia Napoli just south of the Museum.

We've stayed at the Hotel Napolit'amo (used to be called Centro Touristico) four times now and we love it. Very friendly people, situated on Via Toledo in a safe area, very close to restaurants/shopping, a 10 min. walk to the port. Clean and spacious rooms (although a bit old and nothing fancy about them). If you book, ask for an inside room facing the courtyard (it's actually in a palazzo) as via toledo gets kind of loud with the scooters, kids, dogs, etc. Highly recommended.
