Does anyone know if there is an air connection from Rome to Gibraltar? I will be in Rome for 3 weeks next month and might want to spend a couple of days there. It's the only place in Europe that has free-range monkeys. BTW, has anyone here been there? Information is appreciated.

I've been to Gibralter when I lived in Spain for awhile. It's worth a few hours ,IMHO,not a worthy day+ trip from Rome. You might try Malaga as an airport. That's where I lived and it was an easy drive.

I flew into Jerez de la Frontera when I went there. It's about a 2.5 hour drive +/- from Jerez.

I didn't drive in because the trip into Gibraltar was a spur of the minute decision (we were working in El Puerto de Santa Maria). I had not checked with the rental car company about crossing any borders so we parked in Spain and walked in. We got a taxi just inside the border, and spent about 3-4 hours there. Saw the apes and took a number of pictures.
I'd say a good side trip if you're in southern Spain but I'd agree it's too far from Rome.

If you do go, you have to ask to have your passport stamped. I asked on the way in and was told to ask on the way out, which I did and got the stamp. I had to ask because it wasn't at all obvious where to have it stamped.

Hi,
We have been there back in 2001. I wouldn't go there from Rome. You have so many things to see in Italy. It is a good day trip if you stay in South of Spain. Gibraltar itself belongs to UK. So the prices there are in pounds. So if you stay there it will be expensive for nothing. If you decide to go staying at Linea which is the closest Spanish city would be cheaper. Then you walk from there. It is a 2 hours bus ride from Costa del Sol.

Thanks to all for the information. I will take your advice and go another time. I did read though, recently, that there is an airport in Gibraltar now. Checked Ryanair, but didn't see any flights there. Maybe service from London and other places hasn't begun yet.
