thank you all for helping to make this a memorable family trip to rome,massa lubresne and finally lake como. this was 15 days in duration and 2 years in the planning.
most helpful information from slow travel were in order of our trip:
rome-most definitely the apartment and owners review 1193 on this site by salgal. can't thank you enough. these people and apartment made rome home for my family and i do promise to do a trip report.
massa lubresne-maybe not boondocks,but really remote. yes,dragonpat,johnathan, and kevin clark we needed a car and actually hired 2 from autoeurope as everyone here suggested.
also on my own, i did find a great limo service, "amalfi-drive.com"owned by fabrizio and tony. we used them for our excursion to pompeii and we are only regret not booking more excursions with them. next time we will.
nothing much to say about lake como except that the scenery is very beautiful but comes with a very high price tag. i should have asked more of you about this area.
