My wife and I are bringing our 9 month old baby to Rome for a couple of days and then we're trying to decide what area would be ideal for a week or so? Tuscany/Umbria vs Amalfi. We want good wine, good food and easy access to small towns and markets.
Tuscany, Umbria and the AC are very hilly, sometimes with lots of steps and sometimes just steep which might be difficult with all the baby paraphernalia that usually accompanies babies.
However, in Tuscany, there are so many great towns that you can choose that are relatively flat or less steep. The flat towns with easy parking and walking that come to mind are Pienza, Greve and Castellina. I'm sure other posters can add to this list.
Tuscany also has lots and lots of very nice restaurants...the food is usually excellent and there is no shortage of good wine.
Here are some links to articles and posts that I thought you might find helpful pertaining to traveling with kids/babies:
I strongly advse you to choose your location beacuse of what you find interesting to see. One of the reasons for people to go to Tuscany, Umbria or Amalfi is to see the great views, wich you get because all the three areas are hilly. I do not consider Tuscany as that much more flat than Umbria, except for the coastal areas. I would rather consider to use a baby-bjorn more than a stroller if your baby is not too big or to bring a foldable stroller. In addition, I would limit the visit to small villages rather than larger cities, because this is less stressful for the baby. Remember, everything is SO new for them! It is essential to giove them the time to get used to the new situation. Plan on seeing half of what oy would see if you would not have the baby and that might be already too much. Take a place with a garden where you can relax and play on the grass he/she will love it best and you will have a wonderful time!
i agree totally with Letizia's comments! we "plan" but all plans are subject to baby's wellbeing and interest, we're going back to italy for a few wks beginning April, and we're taking our BabyBjorn carrier and Peg Perego stroller, folds in seconds and only weighs 8lbs! One of the places I know my baby--even as young as 4 1/2 months--will enjoy viewing are the Cascada de Mamore waterfalls in Terni (Umbria), there's plenty of resting areas, lots of beautiful trees and grass, 1 or 2 outdoor cafes, we're gonna take each day as it comes, hop in the car and drive everywhere and stop for short day visits, except for Venice! We'll stay there a little longer.
ciao ciao!
